Sonia exhaled. “Diana, I think you should go back to your husband now. Go on your honeymoon. I’ve got this.”

“You’re angry with me.” Diana looked miserable, and it stabbed at Sonia’s heart.

God, why was this happening? Why couldn’t everything be happy and beautiful like it had been last night? Maybe this was her fault. For being difficult and prickly and wanting to rip any love she had to shreds because it was easier than being disappointed.

“I still care about you,” Sonia managed to say. “I just don’t know how to feel right now. We’ll talk later.”

“I’m so sorry,” Diana said softly. Glancing from Brendan to Sonia, she hurried out.

“Sonia,” Brendan began. “Let’s discuss this like adults.”

“Oh, fuck you, Brendan. That’s just code for ‘let’s hide our feelings.’ Did these threesomes mean anything to you? Or were you only screwing around with your brother’s girlfriend to make your dick happy?”

Brendan scrubbed his hands over his face. “Honestly? They were some of the best times of my life. Until…they weren’t. Until you.” He stared at her, his hazel eyes haunted.

The mask had fallen away. He was looking at her with naked need, which meant he was capable of ruining her. His honesty frightened her more than any of his lies, because it was raw and messy and made her naked too. This was why she didn’t do relationships. This was why she ran.

“It’s over now,” Brendan said quietly. “Everything with Di and Ian — it’s over. Are you angry about an affair that happened in the past? An affair I planned to end?”

“I’m angry that you kept me in the dark about an affair involving the three people I love most in the world.” Sonia’s cheeks flamed red, and she clapped her hand over her mouth as if she could stuff the confession back in.

“You’re judging me for having this threesome.”

“It's not the crime, it's the coverup.”

“You call what I did with Diana acrime?”

“It's an expression.”

“I’m not ashamed, Sonia. If I had the choice to do it all over again with Di and Ian, I would. My only regret is that I didn't tell you myself.” He pressed his fingers to his temples.

“Bullshit!” Sonia exploded. “Your only regret is that you couldn't control the situation and spin it the way you want. It's really messy for a politician, isn't it? To have this history with your twin brother's wife? You never would have told me. You would have tried to carry that secret to your grave.”

“We made a pact,” Brendan burst out. “The three of us swore years ago never to tell anyone.”

“Did any of you take into account that someday there might be a person you'dwantto tell? Someone you matter to, like Di and Ian matter to each other?”

“No,” Brendan said huskily. “We didn't.”

“Well, you do.” Sonia turned to the side, pushing her fist against her chin. “You mattered to me.”

Brendan’s hands lifted, like he wanted to take her in his arms and make everything better. Sonia wished he would. A part of her wanted to forgive him and forget this and let him ease it all away. But that would be much too dangerous.

She held herself stiff and straight, and his hands dropped.

“Sonia, I tried to tell you every way I could without actually telling you. Being Di's first kiss, bringing up threesomes…I was sure you'd put the pieces together.”

Heat rose in her cheeks. “Right. Lay the blame on me for not noticing. You're a really good liar, Brendan, you know that? You can put on that clean, pretty mask any time you want. And when you told me about kisses and threesomes, you were wearing it. There was no hint. No vibe. Nothing.”

“You mean, you only saw what you wanted to see.”

Sonia pressed her hands to her face, a lump rising in her throat. “You need to leave.”

“Sonia, listen.”

“I can’t trust you anymore. I won’t.” She shook her head. “Go. We’re done. Congratulations, Brendan. You’re going to be a brilliant politician. I wish you all the luck in the world. And no, I won't tell anyone.”

“You’re scared,” he blurted. “You’re scared of us being together and you want a reason to break it off.”
