“That’s enough for me. You’re—” Sonia rolled over to look at his gorgeous face, his worn-out yet satisfied smile. “You’re perfect too. You’re everything I want.”

“Everything?” Brendan repeated, like he needed that extra bit of reassurance.

“Yes.I—” What did she really want to say? What was the honest truth? “I love you,” she said quietly.

A slow grin lifted the corner of Brendan’s mouth. “Say it again.”

“I love you,” Sonia repeated more loudly, laughing because it felt so surprising and right. “Everything’s gone really fast, and it hasn’t even been two weeks, but I don’t care. I just fucking love you.”

Brendan’s arms came up around her, pulling her into a warm embrace. “I love you too, Sonia. I love everything about you.”

“Even the prickles?”

“Even the prickles.”

“I can’t believe this.” Her whole body felt fatigued, but she was too excited and awake now to even think of sleep. “We’re so crazy together, but we make sense.”

“Total sense,” Brendan agreed.

“We should tell Di and Ian.”

Their eyes met. “Later,” they said at the same time, and burst out laughing.

“But let’s not wait too long,” Brendan said.

“Tomorrow,” Sonia murmured.

“After I make you breakfast?”

Sonia let out a playful groan, burying her face in his chest. “Okay, breakfast.” Her head lifted again. “But maybe we should text them now…so they don’t worry.”

Brendan stretched out a hand to his phone on the bedside table, texting lazily while Sonia watched the screen:Everything’s okay now. Sonia and I send our love. We’ll talk later. Have fun on your honeymoon.

“Mmm,” Sonia sighed, dropping her head onto his chest as he tossed the phone aside. “‘Everything’s okay now.’ You sure about that, Mr. President?”

“I’m sure,” Brendan mused, stroking her hair. “Your dance company’s going to be a huge success. I’ll have a great final year on Senator Wilson’s staff before I transition into campaigning. I’ll make best friends with your grandma, so she’ll be cool with me coming over until your company takes off and you get your own place. And we’ll be close to Ian and Di.”

Sonia shook her head, smiling. “Look at you, planning out the future. Are you always this optimistic?”

He kissed the top of her head. “You make it easy.”

Epilogue

Two years later

Sonia pushed open the stage door and walked out onto the street.

Though it was dark outside, the balmy June air still held the warmth of the day. As she passed the other dancers, she gave Elena a hug and clasped Trevor’s hand. Her dance company had just finished its final show of the season. For the past two years, it hadn’t just survived — it had thrived. More donors and increasing word-of-mouth meant bigger venues and more tickets sold. Sonia kept expecting the next performance to be their last, and pushed the company accordingly for greatness, but this year she’d finally been able to relax a little.

Maybe Brendan’s optimism was rubbing off on her.

Somehow, he’d managed the impossible: he’d convinced her parents to make it to one of her shows in the winter. Sonia couldn’t believe it when she saw her mother and father in the audience, and she’d expected them to leave before the show ended. But they’d stayed, and when the four of them had gone out to dinner afterward, the evening had not been a disaster. Brendan really did have a magic touch.

Strong arms whirled her around and folded her close. Breathing in Brendan’s scent, she rubbed her cheek against his lapel. He tipped up her chin for a kiss and offered her a bouquet of stargazer lilies.

“You were unbelievable,” he murmured. “You outdid yourself tonight.”

“Well, you would know.” Swinging back, Sonia took his hand. “You still come to every single show when you’re in town.”
