Thenowis all his brothers would care about.

He just had to get Anna to understand that. And that he’d do whatever he had to do to have a solid shot at a future with her.

Anything else, he’d figure out along the way.

Gate watched the house, “Thanks, brother.”

“Told you we had your back on this. Meant it,” Talon said.

Gate nodded and then walked back to the truck and rested his ass on the front bumper.

Wasn’t too much longer before Anna emerged from the house, followed closely by Deuce.

They made the truck at the same time.

“Well?” Gate asked.

“Assuming I don’t get fired, Deuce was brilliant,” Anna said, smiling at Gate for the first time in what seemed like forever.

He soaked in that beauty and held it close, the warmth settling deep and spreading.

“Kid going tomorrow?”

“Yeah,” Deuce answered. “Told him we’d be there.”

Gate nodded, “Then we’ll be there.”

Anna shook her head and looked at the ground. He thought he caught the edge of a smirk.

“What else did you promise him, D?” Gate asked.

Deuce looked out over the otherwise deserted street. “That I’d escort him to the judge’s chambers and wait outside the door. That nobody would get near him, especially the motherfucker who hurt him.”

Anna nodded, “He was very convincing.”

“His mom cool with it?” Gate asked.

Deuce nodded again, “Gonna speak to Talon about getting her house on rotation. It’s not that far out of the way from The Woods. Brothers could ride by and check on things.”

“Do that,” Gate said. “I’ve gotta get Anna home. Thanks for coming.”

Deuce ignored the thanks and looked at Anna, “You ever need anything like this again, let me know. This shit,” Deuce nodded toward the house, “is fucked up. You don’t mess with kids.”

Then he turned, made for his Harley, and the brothers roared off into the night.

Chapter Seventeen

A Message Loud Enough

Anna

The second ride I took with Gate in Talon’s truck was just as quiet as the first, but the silence was easier somehow, not as heavy. Not as loaded with dread.

Instead, it sparkled with the luminescence of expectation.

I’d had a problem, one that had nothing to do with our kids, and Gate had helped me fix it, just like he’d always done when we were together.

He’d never cared whether my problems related to him or not, they related to me, which touched him, and that made them Gate’s problems, at least in his mind.
