Talon smirked, “You know me and emotional shit.”

“Always business,” Gate agreed. “At this rate you’ll be tagging empty pussy the rest of your life.”

Talon leveled Gate with a look. “So will you.”

“At least I know what it’s like to have beauty in my bed.”

“And now you’ve got a craving no other hit touches. No, thanks. I’m staying away from that shit,” Talon said.

Gate settled his chair and put his hands to his knees. “True enough. I need a drink.”

Talon laughed and made for the double doors, “You and me both.”

The waitress set three margaritas down on the table, along with some chips and salsa.

“Anything else?” she asked.

I was sitting across from Layla and Gabby at one of Wild Wings sidewalk tables. The restaurant was slammed, and with the doors propped open to the cool air of the spring evening, a live band playing in the square, and people everywhere, the place was a party, and the atmosphere was electric.

“Guac for the table, and keep the ‘ritas coming,” Layla said.

“Gotcha,” the waitress said, and weaved her way through the crowd.

I dunked a chip and picked up the thread of conversation that had been interrupted by tequila and lime. “It’s not that big a deal,” I said.

Gabby licked salt off the side of her glass. “Yes, it is. If you give in, what does that say to the rest of the faculty?”

“That I give a shit and don’t want them to hate me,” I replied.

Gabby had been fuming all night about the bomb Kevin had dropped on us earlier that day. She waspissedfor all the faculty members, but mostly for me, and with her head spinning somewhere on Tatooine, she was convinced that the Empire was striking, and I needed to strike back.

Layla had been uncommonly quiet about the whole thing. Usually, if there was pissed off to be had, Layla was in the middle of it. Loudly.

“You know, there’s a solution to all this,” Layla said.

Gabby’s head swiveled, and she hit Layla with a glare. “You’ve been sitting on a solution this whole time and haven’t said anything?”

“I was mulling,” Layla replied.

Gabby rolled her eyes.

We hit pause as our waitress dropped off the guac and fresh chips.

She left.

I leaned forward, “So what gives? You wanna share?”

“Write about the Iron Dragons,” Layla gave, with a lick and a sip.

My jaw dropped, and breath lodged in my throat.

Gabby’s eyes went wide.

“I can’t,” I whispered.
