Talon took in Ryder, who looked stunned at Brick’s nomination.

Maybe because he kept to himself and minded his own business, or maybe because he was with Smoke when he died.

And as much as seeing Ryder soak up all that was Jenna had gutted Talon over the past months, he had to admit that of the brothers at the table, Ryder was the best man to take Smoke’s place as L.T. Worked hard, kept his mouth shut, and wasn’t scared. Could lead with confidence, and even though he didn’t waste a lot of words, when he spoke, people listened.

Talon threw Gate a chin lift. “Second.”

Ryder’s eyes flicked his way.

“Best man for the job,” Talon answered the unspoken question.

“Vote,” Gate called.

The vote went the way Talon expected it would. Unanimous.

And just like that, Ryder took on the mantle of responsibility left behind by a fallen brother.

Gate stood and strode around the table, tagging the L.T. patch as he went.

Ryder stood to face him, and when his president passed him the patch and then pulled him into a man hug and pounded him on the back, Talon could swear he saw mist in the younger man’s eyes.

“Whatever you need,” Ryder said.

“Whenever you need it,” Gate said in return.

Commotion just outside the chapel doors broke the moment, a woman’s voice growing louder as she argued.

Then the doors were thrown open, and Jenna, hair wild and tears streaming down her face, lunged for Gate before Ink and Ruger could catch her.

Ryder shifted, trying for a grab, “Sweet, women don’t….”

But that’s as far as he got.

Because she slammed her hand down on the table, and said, “I’m calling in my marker. Youswore, Gate.”

“You can’t be in here, Sweet,” Gate started.

“Marker?” Talon echoed.

And then Jenna moved her hand, and Talon saw what she left on the table.

A silver chain.

And the slug from a 9 mm bullet.

Hisbullet.

And every memory of every moment he’d spent with her from ten years ago until now crashed in on him while his vision went red, and he roared, “What theFUCK?”

Chapter Seventeen

I’m the Best for This

Jenna

Ignoring the uproar, I kept my eyes locked on Gate’s, “I need help, Gate. You know I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.”

“Whatever this is, we’re even,” Gate said.
