“I understand. This is all background so I can start getting the stories going in my head. Sorry. I should have made that clear.”

He checked his watch. “Break’s over. I gotta head back out. Good luck with your books.”

I waved him off and immediately cursed these woods for the lack of Wi-Fi and cell signal. Because I needed to run Grinder through every possible database on earth.

And more importantly, I needed to tell Paz. Norman had been up here, and Richard had allowed it. I had a very bad feeling about all of this.

Chapter32

Parker

As soon as Henri’s truck stopped in the driveway, I was jumping out and running into the farmhouse. It had only been two days, but I missed him. The feeling was so foreign to me. For most of my life, I’d prided myself on being fiercely independent, but it was hard to deny how downright painful it was to wake up without him next to me.

And I had so much to tell him. Not only about the investigation. I’d learned so much about his business and family and background. Being out there in the woods opened my eyes to where he’d come from and how he saw the world.

I could hear the piano from the driveway. He was playing, clearly working something out, and it made me even more desperate to see him.

“You’re home.” He met me in the kitchen.

I dropped my bag and jumped into his arms.

“Fuck, I missed you,” he growled between kisses.

“It was only two days.”

“Don’t care.” He carried me toward the stairs. “I didn’t trip over any shoes. It was so sad.”

I gave him a light smack. “Always talking shit.”

He kissed my neck. “Let’s get naked.”

“I have so much to tell you.”

“Great. Naked first, talk later.” His rational brain had clearly left the building, and I was dealing with caveman Paz, which was usually good news for my lady parts.

But as he carried me from the kitchen, an Amazon package on the counter caught my attention.

“Wait. Put me down.”

With a huff of annoyance, he lowered me to the ground.

“It came!” I cried as I tore open the shipping bag. “Yes!”

He stalked toward me, and I ran, hiding the delivery behind my back.

“I will catch you,” he said, prowling my way.

I giggled, pressing myself up against the living room wall with my hands still behind my back. “First I have to give you your present.”

He walked toward me, taking his shirt off and throwing it onto the floor. Fuck. The way he was looking at me, like he was going to devour me, made my thighs shake.

“It’s a very romantic gift,” I said.

He slapped his palms against the wall, caging me in, and planted his lips on mine.

I placed the hat on his head and kissed him back fiercely.

With one more nip at my bottom lip, he stepped back and took off the hat. “Stud Muffin?” He inspected the trucker-style hat like it was on fire.
