Chapter38

Pascal

My head ached and nausea rolled in my gut. The small, dirty room I’d been thrown into was empty, save for the folding chair that I was currently tied to.

Where was Parker? Had they hurt her? The thought made me even sicker. I never should have let her go to the trailer park alone.

I hadn’t even told her that I loved her. And she could be hurt. Or worse. The panic rose up within me, sending me spiraling again. My throat felt like it was closing up as fear gripped my heart. But I had to keep my wits about me.

Fucking Heberts. I’d always suspected they were criminals, but to go this far? It was almost unfathomable. But now I knew the truth. Mitch and Paul Hebert were running a large-scale drug operation through their logging business and laundering the proceeds in a variety of shell companies all over the state.

But of course, the idiots had failed to properly cover their tracks. Law enforcement would catch on eventually. But right now, my only concern was Parker.

She had to be here too. We were in the woods. The hard left they’d taken off the Golden Road meant we were likely in the south quadrant, near the border of the Heberts’ land.

We weren’t at their camp. This was an outpost at best, and the ride hadn’t been long enough. So, on the plus side, we weren’t terribly far from civilization and potential rescue. If I could get out of this room and get a look around, I could make a plan.

My next panic attack was knocking at the door of my mind, ready to take over, but a shifting sound at the sole window in the room drew my attention.

A light shined through the small pane of glass, temporarily blinding me. I blinked rapidly, and the light was diverted. And there, at the window, wearing my jacket and shining a flashlight, was Parker.

My heart soared. She was alive. But what was she doing here? Outside the building?

My hands were tied, so I couldn’t unlock the window. She waved an arm, signaling me to move back. Following her wordless instruction, I shifted my chair so that I was blocking the door. That way, if someone in the building heard us, I could block them from getting to Parker so she’d have a chance to escape.

She gave me a thumbs-up and struck the window with a small object. The crack of the window was relatively quiet, and from the impact point, fissures spread like a spider web. Then she used her boot to push the glass out of the way.

The sound of the glass clattering to the ground was louder than the initial break, but the building was large, and a massive generator was running outside, providing plenty of background noise. With any luck, she hadn’t garnered any attention.

She wrapped her hand in what looked like a sweatshirt and gently swept the glass away from the sill. Then she draped the shirt over the frame and swung her legs through before dropping to the floor like a spy in an action movie.

She was wearing winter boots, leggings, and my down jacket, and her face was pale.

“Hey, stud muffin,” she said, walking towards me. “What the fuck did they do to you?” In a heartbeat, she was in front of me and cupping my face.

She gently ripped the tape off my lips, then tipped forward and kissed them.

“What are you doing here?” I hissed.

“Saving your dumb ass,” she replied. “Did they hurt you?”

“Let’s get into details later. We’ve got to get you out of here. I overheard Mitch saying he was going to ‘personally shoot that cop bitch in the head.’”

She shrugged, brandishing the seat belt cutter I’d stowed in her glove box. “Did you break the window with that?” I asked, impressed.

She nodded. “And I cut through my wrist ties,” she said as she sliced through mine.

I rubbed my wrists and pulled her into my lap.

“That is fucking hot,” I said, reaching into my pocket and pulling out my multi-tool.

“Of course you keep a Swiss Army knife in your jeans.”

“Damn right I do. Dumbasses didn’t think to take it off me. They also didn’t take my phone, so I’ve been voice recording them for the past few hours.” I removed it from my pocket, where, sure enough, it was still recording.

“Any signal?”

“Nope, but we’re not that far out. Once we get closer to town, we can call the police.”
