Liv nodded. “I rode up here with a few of the plainclothes guys, and they reached out. I didn’t catch his name. He’s a logger, though.”

“Probably Gus,” Remy murmured.

Damn. This was all mind-boggling. If things had gone even a little differently—if Liv had hesitated to call the cops, or if the FBI hadn’t taken her seriously, or even if the Heberts hadn’t been cooperative—we would be dead.

And that realization sat like a stone in my gut.

“Thank fuck you’re okay,” Remy said. “Did Parker really take out ten guys to save you when you got kidnapped? That’s the word on the street.”

Parker smiled at me, mischief alight in her eyes.

“Something like that,” I said, giving her a wink.

“She’s a keeper,” he said, raising his eyebrows.

“What did I miss?” Henri asked, looking between Parker and me. “Are you guys together?”

We nodded, not taking our eyes off one another.

“I thought you were fake dating for a cover story.” My sister crossed her arms over her chest and gave me that look that had always terrified me.

“They were. But it’s real now,” Remy said.

“How did Remy know?” Adele asked. “And dammit, Pascal. What did I tell you? I knew this would happen.”

“You’re dating?” Henri removed his hat and ran his hands through his hair. “Is it serious?”

“He took a bullet for her, dumbass. I’d say it’s serous,” Liv quipped.

“I’m kind of in love with her,” I said softly.

“And I’m kind of in love with him,” Parker replied, wearing a soft smile.

“Welcome to the family, Parker,” Henri said, giving her a hint of a smile and standing as tall as he could in the cramped space.

“This is so adorable,” Liv shouted, jostling Parker. “And romantic! I need my phone. I have so many book ideas.”

My siblings bickered like they always did, and Parker got sucked into Liv’s newest idea while my body was hit with overwhelming fatigue. The sense of what I could have lost tonight overwhelmed me, and my eyes welled with tears.

But before I could tell them all how thankful I was for the way things turned out, the EMT was shooing them out and updating our arrival information with the hospital in Bangor. It would be a bit of a ride, but I was stable. The FBI agents would drop by tomorrow for more rounds of questions, and although I wanted to help, I was more than ready to put this all behind me.

Because I had other things to look forward to. Including the gorgeous woman sitting next to me. She needed to be checked out as well. The EMT had put her arm in a sling, suspecting she had dislocated her shoulder, but she didn’t complain once. She just clutched my hand as the ambulance bounced all over the dirt road.

“You saved my life,” she said, gazing down at me.

“You saved mine first,” I replied.

Even before her heroics tonight, she had saved me. She’d pulled me out of the downward spiral I’d been stuck in for years, and she’d made me see what was right in front of me. A fulfilling career, a loving family, and a community that was rooting for me.

And her, hopefully, if she’d have me.

“I think I should stay for a while,” she said, squeezing my hand. “Supervise your recovery.”

I grinned. “Is that right?”

“Yes. Get ready for more mess, Gagnon, because I think you’re going to be stuck with me.”

In my periphery, the EMT gave me a nod before turning his attention to the equipment to give us some privacy.
