What the hell was this place?

Standing six feet away from the short flight of porch steps leading to an open set of double doors, Caera felt as though her new lover had brought her to the edge of the most famous rabbit hole in the world, and was simply waiting to pitch her down the long, dark tunnel into madness.

Three huge barns took up a great deal of space, along with the graveled parking lot. Behind her, there was a pretty house with the lights on in the downstairs windows, and the occasional, muted cry of a fretful baby, but Saul hadn’t dragged her out into the night to visit whoever lived there.

No, he and his friends—well, their friends, she supposed—were intent on getting her inside the club they called Avalon.

The bits and pieces of information she’d gotten from their conversations over Chinese food earlier had built a picture in her head that was nowhere near what she was staring at. It was bigger, more intimidating, than she thought.

“Why are there no windows?”

“Privacy. Members come from all over to play here, little rabbit, and they deserve to have some anonymity if they require it.” Waiting patiently beside her, Saul gestured to the doors. “We have a sign-in area. Members have a keycard they can use to gain access to the club, or the Dom on duty can do it for them if they forget the card. Guests need to have a sponsor and fill out paperwork. Braun is strict with security.”

“Do I need to fill stuff in?”

“Only a couple of forms.” Saul inched forward as though it might tempt her to do the same, but she was getting the familiar itch under her skin that served as a warning. “I’ll be your sponsor, and if you like what you see, I’ll talk to Braun about making you a member.”

What if she didn’t like what was in there? A light spanking and a few prongs of pain during sex certainly charged her batteries, so to speak, but she guessed there was more than just a selection of bare palms waiting to clap down on an unsuspecting ass beyond those doors.

The sharp snap of a whip echoed like a gunshot in her head, bowing her shoulders and twisting her spine to evade the memory of agony burning a streak of fire into her flesh.

Maybe this wasn’t a good idea. There were too many blank spots in her head and not enough memories to fill in the gaps. Going into a new place was disturbing her anxiety, priming the triggers on every bomb in the minefield, just waiting for her to step on one.

“Remember what I said, Caera. We’re not going beyond the first barn, which is the social area. There’s a bar and a stage, and seating areas so we can get something to drink and just relax.”

Their friends were already inside, she reminded herself. They’d gone ahead to give Caera time to evaluate the situation. Anarchy had been laughing as Jasper swung her off her feet and carried her through the doors, so she wasn’t afraid of what was in there.

Connie’s arm had been linked through Thane’s.

Avalon didn’t make them nervous or uneasy, because it was part of who they were. Coming here was like walking through the front door into home for them, and whatever went on in those walls gave them a thrill.

Another pair of headlights swept the parking lot as someone drove in and chose their spot, bringing the total number of vehicles to ten. When the engine cut out and the door opened, Caera groped for Saul’s hand.

She didn’t like being out here with the shadows looming beyond the security lights.

“That’s my girl,” he said quietly, escorting her up the steps. “We can stay as long as you want. Braun and Bodie live in the house behind us,” he reminded her, “but with the baby being fresh out of the oven, they won’t be here tonight. Liam will come over and say hello when he has a minute free, and Loki won’t be able to resist coming over to hit on you. Don’t pay him any mind—he’d flirt with a sunflower if it had tits and smiled at him.”

Caera giggled, ending with a snort at the imagery of a tall, gangly sunflower sporting double-Ds and flashing a set of sparkling white teeth. Actually, it was more horrifying than amusing, but her anxiety expressed itself in weird ways. “I’ve already met Loki, when he drove me up to the cabin. He didn’t flirt, but I can try if you like?”

Saul shot her a narrow glare as they paused at the club threshold. “Would you like him to die, little rabbit? Because I will pound his pretty face into mush if he steals you away from me, and then I’ll toss you over my shoulder and shackle you to my bed for the next fifty years.”

Oh, was that a touch of jealousy? It was kinda hot to be on the receiving end of that manner of possessiveness. “Have you seen my flirtation skills, Saul?”

His lips curved into a wicked grin. “Would those be the fainting naked at my feet skills? I saw, I liked, and they damn well did their job. Have I not fucked you hard enough to leave you with confirmation of just how well they worked?”

The heat of her flush obliterated the slight chill in the air, rising into her cheeks. “Saul.”

He turned and grasped her jaw, running his thumb over her mouth. “Hmm, I seem to remember a different honorific spoken from these lips earlier, something I prefer. Can you remember what it was, little rabbit, or should I give you a clue?”

I’ll take dominant for five hundred, Alex.

The Jeopardy line was completely inappropriate, but it was the first thing that popped into her head. That damn thumb was stroking over her lower lip, side to side, making her wet for no sane reason. She wanted to bite it, lick it, suck on it and drive him crazy, the way he made her feel.

Was it weird that his touch felt more intimate now, after all they’d shared today? It was like her skin anticipated their connection, welcoming the contact and turning it into something ridiculously arousing.

A man walked past them without saying a word as he disappeared inside.

Saul’s eyes never left her face.
