Panting, slightly bewildered, Callie wriggled into a more comfortable position, hunkering down and squeezing Higgledy-Piggledy in her arms. “Why are we hiding?”

“’Cause then they has to find us, silly!”

The thumping continued; the chair cracked.

“What happens when they finds us?” Shit, she was talking like Alicia now.

“Whatever Daddies want to do. Has you never played hide and seek with them?” Thewith themsounded likewiv dem.

“They’s new Daddies…”

“Oh.” Alicia nodded soberly, drawing out the sound in understanding. “Daddy will teach them how to play. He’s the bestest Daddy.”

That simple statement puffed up Callie’s indignation. “Nuh-uh, my Daddies are the bestest!”

They glared at each other for a long, fraught moment before Alicia pursed her lips thoughtfully. She reached out and patted Callie’s bare thigh. “We’s both have the bestest Daddies.”

Callie considered for a second or two, then nodded. That was acceptable. “Okay.”

Her hand shot out, the smallest finger extended in a curl. “Pinky swear!”

They linked fingers solemnly.

“Where could those little troublemakers be?” Alicia’s Daddy said loudly. “We’ve looked all over and still can’t find them.”

“Sees, that’s cuz we’re really goods at hiding,” her partner in crime whispered, giggling with every word. “They won’t finds us here.”

Through the gap, Callie watched the three men search the room, biting her bottom lip to stop the laugh escaping when they lifted cushions and checked beneath the rug.

“Maybe they squeezed through the air vents,” Evander suggested.

“My palm is tingling,” Elias told them ominously, holding his arm out with his palm facing downward.

Slowly, his entire limb twitching, he began to move around the room. The tremors in his arm got stronger the closer he got to their hiding place.

“What do we do? “ Callie hissed urgently.

“I don’t know! I never met a Daddy who could do that! Should we run?”

If they ran, one of them would get caughtfor sure. The Daddies were too fast, even if they were old.

Then Elias was directly in front of the box, rich satisfaction in his voice as he announced, “Gentlemen, I believe we’ve found our troublesome two.”

The moment he lifted the lid, Alicia grabbed Callie’s hand and tugged as she clambered out.

An arm as strong as iron hooked around Callie’s waist, hoisting her up, out, and against Elias’s chest.

“No!” she squealed, kicking her legs.

Just as Alicia’s feet touched the floor, her Daddy scooped her up, carrying her over to an armchair and folding her over the arm.

“What did I tell you would happen if you disturbed our guest while she was sleeping, princess?”

Alicia harrumphed quietly. “I’d get five smacks, Daddy.”

“And what did you do?”

Like a nightmare unfolding in slow motion, the big bastard unfastened his belt with a harsh jingle of metal on metal as the silver tip passed through the buckle.
