“Lucky man. So, what can I get you?”

He paused, wondering if he dared step out of line. New was good, right? Fresh starts, new beginnings. Leaving bad memories behind and forging a brighter future.

“A beer, a Scotch, water, and juice.” His fingertips tapped on the bar as he deliberated over his next choice of words. “Are you happy here, Liam? I don’t mean with Braun and the others, or even at the club. Does your life here in Phoenix make you and Sierra happy?”

“This is our home. Our friends, the people we love are here. This is where we belong.”

“Can I say something without you smashing one of those bottles over my head?”

“Like I could reach,” Liam joked, but the grin didn’t reach his eyes. “Go ahead.”

“I think the stress of losing Wyatt, and all these problems with Sierra are taking their toll on you. Being here every day, passing the spot where he died…you need a break. My guess is, Sierra isn’t faring much better than you.” He cocked his head. “Are either of you seeing Connie in a professional capacity?”

“On occasion. More to pacify Con than anything else.”

“What does she say?”

“We need a vacation, blah, blah. We should be taking time for ourselves, grieving for Wyatt properly. She thinks a lot of our problem with conceiving is down to—”

“Stress.”

“Yeah. Mental and emotional imbalances, not physical.”

Evander nodded slowly, then took the plunge. “You know what I have in the pipeline for Denver, right? Another club, residential, with specifically assigned areas for different kinks. Log cabins, acres of open land.”

“It’s been a hot topic around here. You’ll knock it out of the park.”

“That’s my intention. To do that, I need the right people behind me. I can rebuild and renovate. Reinvent the place. But just like Avalon, it won’t be the ranch that’s the heart of the club; it’s going to be the people in it.”

A bottle of water dropped onto the bar, followed by a beer.

When Liam met his eyes curiously, Evander kept his serious business face on.

“I have a proposition for you, Liam.”

The End…For Now
