“Mom,” I grit between my teeth. “We are only friends.”

“You should reconsider. You two would have the most adorable babies.” She glances between the two of us.

Trey stifles a laugh while I roll my eyes. There’s no stopping her, so I switch topics.

“Mom, have you seen Tatum?”

She glances around the ballroom. “Oh, she’s around here somewhere.”

“That’s okay, we’ll find her.” I pull on Trey's arm, dragging him away from my mom.

Trey leans down so his mouth is next to my ear. “Did you hear that? We’d make adorable babies.”

I backhand his stomach and he exhales an oomph. “Yeah. Not going to happen.”

“Well how about we practice then?” He wiggles his eyebrows.

I shake my head with a laugh. “That’s definitely not happening.”

I spot Tatum standing at one of the high-top tables typing away on her phone. “Hey Tate! Am I glad to see you.”

She fumbles to turn off her phone screen, and places it face down on the table.

“Hey Olivia…and Trey?” She quirks an eyebrow at me.

I turn to Trey. “Can you get us some drinks?”

“Sure. What would you like?”

“Wine.” I turn to Tatum. “Want anything?”

“Wine for me too. Thank you.”

Trey saunters off. And I direct my attention to Tatum.

She tilts her head to the side, eyes trained on mine. “So, you’re here with Trey?”

“Why is everyone surprised by that?” Kind of a dumb question to ask because what girl doesn’t bring her boyfriend. At least I think he’s still my boyfriend. Were we even boyfriend and girlfriend? I did meet the parents, so that must mean something even though it goes down in the record books as the worst meeting ever.

“Okay, but how does your boyfriend feel about you being on a date with another man, most importantly his brother?” She tilts her head at me. I had no idea I would end up being the evening’s gossip topic.

“Half-brother. But that’s a completely different story. Ledger showed up at my house today, right before Trey arrived.”

She shifts to face me, concern etched on her face. “What happened?”

“He was upset that Trey showed up to be my date. I don’t know what to do. He’s said nothing to me all week, and then when he does, I’m with Trey. I don’t know if things can get any messier at this point. Plus, this is more Trey’s style. Ledger wouldn’t fit in here.” I glance behind me, and Trey is chatting with an older investment banker. “See. Trey’s in his element. I can’t picture Ledger talking to these people. And what would he talk about? How to replace an engine. The people here don’t care about that. They just take it somewhere to have it done for them.”

“People like Ledger?” She raises an eyebrow.

“Yes. No. Not like that. This just isn’t his style.”

She shrugs. “I hope he was the one to make that decision.”

Why does everyone keep saying that? Instead of answering her, I divert the attention back to her. “Where’s Adam?”

“Oh. He couldn’t make it.” She flings her hand in the air as if she’s brushing her words away. “Got caught up with something at work, but he made a donation in his absence.”

“I’m sorry Tate.” I rest my hand on hers.
