What she really means is a guy who has money. Who’s more than likely sleeping with an intern or assistant. Much like my father. Hard pass.

“Doctor Jones has a newly single son—”

“I gotta get back to work. See you later. Okay. Byeee.”

I pull my phone away while she’s mid-sentence and press end. She’s exhausting on the best of days. Don’t get me wrong, I love my mom, but she takes her job as a socialite way too seriously. If she isn’t organizing some charity gala, she’s arranging a formal brunch, or she’s planning some lavish trip, which may or may not include my father. Planning the parties is my favorite part, even if I have to deal with my mom. At least my younger sister, Tatum, is always at my side and takes some of the pressure off me and my lackluster love life. If I have to hear, “Olivia, how can a beautiful woman like you still be single? When are you going to settle down?” And my favorite. “You’re not getting any younger. Everything won’t stay perky forever.” I’m going to end up in an orange jumpsuit. Thirty-one is not old. Everything is still perky, thank you very much. I square my shoulders and glance down. The girls look exceptional today in this blouse. They are definitely not lacking in the perky department.

“Admiring your boobs again?” Parisa drops her bag from her shoulder and it hits the ground with a thud. I glance up with my chest still puffed out. “They look fantastic today. New bra?”

“No. Just gravity not taking its toll on them yet.” My shoulders fall. “So, what’s up? How was your weekend?”

“Exhausting. Taking care of a one-year-old, is draining. Then Seth is continuously trying to sex me up, hoping to have another baby. Which is sweet he wants another child, but also draining. Sadly, I’m excited to be at work so I can have five minutes to myself.”

Parisa met her boyfriend and now baby daddy while they both worked here at The Blue Stone Group in the marketing department. One day they hated each other. The hatred grew more and more every day. Eventually, it became as big as a hot air balloon ready to burst which didn’t help when a promotion pinned them against each other. After a work trip to Colorado left them stranded together, the balloon burst. The hatred turned to passion, and they worked out their differences between the sheets.

“That must besocumbersome to have your nerdy, sexy boyfriend tie you up with his bow ties and have his wicked way with you.” I dramatically roll my eyes.

“Don’t get me wrong, I love every minute of it. But sometimes I want to be the one to tie him up, and leave him there, just so I can have a few minutes to myself.” Parisa huffs as she throws her weight against the desk. She props her head up on her hand. “Anyway, how was your weekend?”

Do I tell her everything that happened? The longer time goes on, it feels more and more like a lucid dream. “I kissed a guy.”

Parisa claps her hands in front of her and squeals. “Please tell me you put all of us out of our misery and you’ve finally hooked up with Trey.” She taps her chin. “In fact, I believe I picked July on the board.”

“Um. What board?”

She digs out her phone and taps on the screen a few times. “Shit. That was Charlie. Lucky bitch,” she mutters.

“Hello? What are you talking about?”

“Oh. We kinda started a board with months that you and Trey would finally get together.” She tucks her phone into her bag.

“Hold on. You guys placed bets on when Trey and I would hook up?”

“Well…yeah. I guess. You two have been pulling at each other's attraction cords for so long. It was only a matter of time before it finally happened. We decided to have a bit of fun with it.”

A part of me is hurt and a little betrayed that my friends gambled on my love life. But also, I wish I could have gotten in on that. “How much was the pot?”

She taps her chin thinking. “Since it went on for so long, it might be up to one thousand dollars.”

My jaw drops as my eyes go wide. “A thousand dollars. Why didn’t I know about this?”

“Because that would be cheating. Anyway, who’d you kiss?” She leans in closer, eagerness in her eyes, wanting all the juicy details.

“Well, technically, it was two guys.” I hold up two fingers.

Her eyes go wide. “In the same night?”

I nod.

“You hussy. So, spill it already.”

“Trey was the first guy.”

“Ahh! I knew it! Tell me everything.” She rubs her hands together, expecting to get the dirty details. Unfortunately, the only dirty details were stuck to the bottom of my shoe.

“Honestly, there isn’t much to tell.” I shrug.

Parisa tilts her head to the side. “What do you mean?”
