“Okay, relax.” I’m doing my best to ease her fear. I know this is a bad situation, but I really don’t want her to panic. And, fortunately, I may just be able to be her knight in shining armor here. “Lucky for you, I work for the best security team in the country. We’ll help you.”

Momentary relief washes over her pretty face, but then she frowns.

“What’s wrong?”

“Thank you. But I, ah…” She clears her throat and shifts in the seat. “I don’t think I can afford to hire you guys. My business is doing decent, but I’m still a bit of a starving artist.”

“Don’t worry about it. We’ll figure out exactly what you saw and keep you safe. I promise.”

Her brow furrows in worry. “Why’re you helping me?” she asks quietly.

“Because despite what you may think, I can be a good guy. On rare occasions.” And definitely for her.

When she looks over at me, guilt washes over her face. “I wasn’t very nice to you the last time we, ah…well, when we were at Dash and Lake’s wedding. I’m sorry.”

“Hey, it’s okay. Water under the bridge,” I reassure her, though I am grateful for the soft words of apology.

“It’s just…I had my reasons and thought it best if we kept our distance.”

She’s speaking in the past tense, and I like that. A lot. Maybe she won’t be so cold to me now that I helped save her gorgeous ass. And it is definitely an ass worth saving.

“We can talk about that later. Right now, I’m getting you on the Slater jet and taking you back to San Diego with us.” Her multi-colored eyes widen and I hold up a hand before she can argue. “It’s not safe here. You can’t go back home because those guys have your information. Which means you need to get far away from here. Lucky for you, I just happen to be a first-class pilot ready to fly a pretty kickass private jet back to Cali. And there’s a seat with your name on it, sweetness.”

The corner of her mouth edges up. “You’re such a charmer.”

I grin at her. “What can I say? It comes naturally.”

“I bet your whole family is a bunch of sweet talkers.”

My grin fades when I think of my family. Luckily, we’re about to enter the airport, so instead of commenting, I deflect. “We’re here.”

After directing the driver to the private tarmac where the Slater jet waits, I pay the fare, and Ivy and I get out. A quick glance at the Phantom Chronograph Night Stalkers special edition watch on my wrist reveals that Colt and Eden should be arriving soon. The markers on the dial feature a luminous compound that makes it glow blue at night. I thought that was pretty fucking cool, and the whole reason I dropped a small fortune for it.

Yep, I paid seven grand because it glows in the dark.

It also has a cool engraving of the Night Stalkers insignia on the caseback. So I figured, why the hell not?

“Let’s get you settled inside. I need to kick the tires and light the fires.”

She arches a dark brow. “What’s that mean?”

“Pre-flight check lingo. After you,” I say with a sweeping motion of my hand, nodding to the steps that lead into the aircraft.

“Thanks,” she murmurs and heads up.

No, thank you,I think, watching the sway of her hips. I do absolutely nothing to mask my appreciation of her round ass and the way those jeans cling to her long legs. Gritting my teeth, I follow her up and head into the cockpit. Those legs of hers are going to be the death of me.

I can see the autopsy report now. Cause of death: “unrelenting erection.”

“Am I allowed in?” she asks, hanging back and peering inside.

“On my plane, always.” I crook a finger and then point to the empty seat beside me. “Wanna be my co-pilot?”

“Are you serious?”

“No,” I laugh. “You can sit with me, but don’t touch anything.” My deadpan delivery has the desired effect and elicits a quick startle, followed by an easy smile because I’m joking. Kind of.

While she drops down in the co-pilot chair next to me, I reach for my list. No matter how many times I fly, and I have thousands of hours logged, I always like to look it over. Distractions happen, and I don’t ever get sloppy when it comes to preparing for a flight.
