If Marco was nervous, then I probably should be as well.

Squashed in the back of Bruno’s car, he insisted we all ride together. I had a feeling in my gut that he still thought Marco would run.

After eating one good meal, I had a storage tub resting in my lap. While I didn’t believe bribery would get me too far, my home-cooked meal might do some real wonders.

“If Antonio says something you don’t like, you can’t just tell him no,” Marco warned. “He’s not as nice as Bruno.”

“Antonio is pretty scary,” Lily confirmed, “but he’s a pushover. Has a soft spot for women.”

Bruno let out a long sigh. Rather than scolding her, he shook his head. Guess their boss hadn’t been the only one to grow soft.

When Marco and I first met, he threatened to murder me. Funny to think about it now.

Love was wild.

Spotting a mansion in the distance, Marco continued to stir. I reached over to give him a reassuring squeeze. Everything would be fine. It had to be. Our happiness depended on it.

On the way, I tried to prepare myself. If I wanted to be with Marco and I was accepted by the family, then I knew I’d have to abandon my uncle’s cabin and move out here to the countryside. Personally, I didn’t want to leave my home. Sometimes, sacrifices had to be made.

I wanted to start something new with Marco. I loved him. Having confidence in my feelings, I planned on telling him after his boss made up his mind.

I didn’t want to make anything harder for Marco if events didn’t go in our favor.

“Are you ready?” Bruno asked, peering back at us.

Marco opened his door, grunting. Not very reassuring if you ask me.

I followed next to Marco as Bruno led the way inside the large home. Men in black and tan suits lingered around. I didn’t understand what they did but felt thankful no one paid us any attention.

Once we moved deeper into the home, Lily slipped away into a room, wishing us luck beforehand.

“Antonio is not going to be pleased,” Marco warned me in a hushed voice. “He won’t care if you’re standing there or not. Just let him get his anger out of the way and then we’ll have a conversation.”

I wasn’t sure what Marco was trying to prepare me for. I had to be able to handle myself. Whatever was going to happen, it came with the lifestyle.

Bruno stopped at a door, knocking against it. Even he looked a bit stressed. Before I could look too deep into it, he opened the door and stepped inside.

We entered an office. Two men were already inside. A blonde-haired man wearing a smile sitting on a leather couch and a grouchy-looking guy sitting behind the desk. When they both looked our way, I immediately could tell who Antonio was.

“Well, looks like a lost dog was found,” the blonde murmured, grinning at Marco. He then glanced in my direction, his eyes coming off warm despite his wicked smile.

Marco stiffened next to me and I watched his jaw tighten. So, the guy was not a good one.

“Elias, a moment,” the man behind the desk ordered.

Elias shrugged, letting out a bored sigh. “I think I’ll head home, actually. No offense, brother, but I’m tired of looking at your face. I think I’ll go home and look at someone much prettier.”

The Antonio fellow looked more agitated. Perfect.

Watching the blonde leave with a tantalizing laugh, my stomach tightened when the door shut and we were left behind with Bruno and Antonio.

Antonio stared at Marco, hardly giving me a moment of his time. “It’s been two months, Marco. Two months.”

Bruno moved, grabbing my arm. Without asking, he tugged me toward the leather couch. In a hushed voice, he urged me to sit and not say a word. I’d only make it worse. My gut told me he was telling the truth.

Marco kept a straight face somehow. “I was hunting for Jimmy Lawerence. I didn’t know another family got him.”
