While I didn’t entirely believe him, I didn’t trust myself either. What if I let him free and he took advantage of my kind heart?

When I didn’t move, he let out a long sigh.

“Frankie, you stole all my belongings. Even if I tried anything, I wouldn’t get far.” He paused as his brows came together. “My gun, you took it right? Well, you can shoot me if I try anything.”

My toes curled at the sound of my name coming from his lips. At first, I feared him knowing it. Now I kind of wanted to hear him say it over and over again. He had a hint of an accent and the sound of him rolling my name just did something to me. Bad Frankie.

“I’ve never shot someone in my life.” My words were true. While I might have killed animals for food, that didn’t come close to what was going to be expected of me.

“Go grab the gun, I’m serious,” Marco insisted. Did hewantto die?

I did as he asked and left the room long enough to grab the gun I hid. On the way back, I noticed how heavy the gun was in my hand. Fully loaded, surely.

“I’ve never even touched a gun before today,” I admitted.

His expression twisted. “How long have you survived out here?”

“Well, I took the cabin from my uncle two-”

“It was a rhetorical question,” he snapped, “go buy a gun to protect yourself after this mess is cleared up.”

Marco then surprised me, walking me through how to shoot a gun. Explaining where the safety was, I did as I was told and turned it off.

“Then all you have to do is pull the trigger and pray you don’t miss,” he explained, “just don’t accidentally shoot yourself. Now, can I use the bathroom?”

“I won’t hesitate,” I told him firmly when I dug into my back pocket. Pulling out the key to the lock, I threw it at him. “Bathroom is down the hall to the left.”

Marco rolled his eyes, collecting the key. While he worked on twisting the lock, I got in a stance.

I could feel my racing pulse up in my throat. My palms were starting to sweat as I watched him unwind the chains. I sure hoped I had a mean poker face, otherwise, he’d know I’ddefinitelyhesitate.

The chain hit the ground and Marco flexed his arm. From the redness, I felt bad for wrapping his arm so tight. Then he stood up and my heart pounded harder.

Marco was bigger and bulkier than I remembered. Not quite the giant, he was definitely built to take on one barehanded. My heart thumped harder as I got a better look at him.

If he wanted to test my promise to shoot him, he could easily walk over and grab me. From the way he easily yanked me toward him earlier, I knew he had the strength. Never had I felt like such a ragdoll before.

Swallowing thickly, I watched him turn away, stalking down the hallway following the directions I gave.

When he entered the bathroom and shut the door, my shoulders sank.

Sitting down, I turned the safety back on the gun. I really didn’t want to risk accidentally shooting myself. Hopefully, he’d keep his word and wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

Marco

Iwantedto stick around. For the man who used Jimmy’s identity, of course.

Otherwise, Frankie wouldn’t stop being harassed until the guy was dealt with.

Staring at my reflection in the large mirror, I scowled. Clenching my fists tight enough to dig my nails into my palms, I glared at my reflection.

Before getting thumped in the head, I didn’t give a fuck about some woman’s terrors.

Splashing my face with cold water, I washed away all the sweat and dirt clinging to my skin.

It wasn’t until there was a knock on the door that I remembered Frankie was still waiting.

When I swung the door open after two steps, a gasp left her lips. Noticing my gun in her hand was pointing at the ground instead of me, I frowned.
