Leaving the room, I got the chance at some fresh air to clear my mind.

Taking the chains out of the home to avoid getting locked up again, I hid them within the bundle of trees. When I returned to the cabin, I was ready to begin my hunt.

If someone was using Jimmy’s identity, I had to bet they were someone who knew he was dead. Someone who knew they could use advantage. Surely, there had to be something somewhere.

Frankie

Sweat had collected on my forehead by the time I woke up. My nightmares felt a little too real this time around. Rather than an unknown man haunting my dreams, it had been Marco. The brute hadn’t just broken into my house either, he made contact with my body, a bit too much.

Sitting up in my bed, I squeezed my eyes shut and focused on calming my beating heart.

I was fine. It was just a dream. One that left my skin feeling a bit clammy. Too vivid.

I took a cool shower to help relieve my flushed skin and aching body. Quick and easy, I planned on getting my chores done quickly so I could take care of Marco. I still needed to do something with him.

With a brush in hand, I worked on untangling my wet hair as I headed toward the living room. Not expecting him to be awake in the early hours of dawn, my body froze when I didn’t spot him laying next to the radiator,

My heart immediately raced as I tried to figure out what happened. Then I spotted him, laying across my couch, sleeping.

Not only had Marco escaped, but he also chose to stick around and rest. What the hell? And where had my chain gone?

Sucking in a breath, I stepped forward. My feet moved for me. I didn’t think, only creeping until I reached his body.

Marco was sleeping peacefully. Stomach rising and falling nice and slow, I noticed his lips weren’t pressed into a frown. The guy looked relaxed.

Letting my eyes run down his entire body, I took mental notes of his appearance. He sure had big hands, and thick fingers too with some hair growing on them. There were scars on his knuckles, some more faded than others. I wondered what caused him to get injured.

If he’d shot people before, I could bet he punched them too.

My eyes went back to his face, settling there. Despite having a crooked nose, I hated to think the guy was somewhat handsome. Marco looked like the kind of guy who got in a lot of fights.

Without thinking, I reached out. I brushed my fingers against his forehead, brushing his hair out of his eyes.

My fingers lasted on his skin for all of two seconds before his eyes snapped open and one of his meaty claws wrapped around my wrist. If it weren’t for his hold, I would’ve fallen backward onto my ass.

Once the guy blinked a few times, staring at me for most of the time, he immediately released my wrist.

“What time is it?” he asked, looking around, keeping his eyes pointed in every direction other than in mine. Sleep glazed his eyes over. Clearly, he wasn’t used to waking up at such an early hour.

“H-How did you get free?” I stumbled, purposely ignoring the tingles rolling up my arm. Now was not the time to think about the dream or acknowledge the lack of fear I felt.

“You picked a cheap lock,” he admitted before sitting up. Scratching at his throat, he yawned.

How in the hell did he look so comfortable?

“Why didn’t you leave?” I asked next, fighting the urge to make some distance between our bodies.

“I have a job to finish.” The answer came immediately, as did his frown.

I stumbled back, much to his dismay. “You aren’t going to finish me off, right?”

Marco squinted at me, his frown growing. “Frankie, I’m not going to hurt you. You have to take me at my word. If I want to find the guy pretending to be your uncle, then I need your help.”

“What do you need me to do?” I asked, ignoring the tightness forming in my gut.

If Marco could help me live a silent life again, then I could definitely get something out of listening to him. Plus, the quicker we found the guy, the sooner Marco would also be out of my life.

Marco hunched over the couch, wiping the sleep from his eyes. “My family must realize I’ve gone missing. They’re going to come out here and start asking questions unless we do something about it. We need to take my car and my phone somewhere far away. We’ll hide my phone and hope it prolongs their hunt.”
