Jumping up, I fired at the men emptying the clip. He jumped in the back seat. I reversed the car down the alley putting distance between us. I came around the corner, turned the car in the opposite direction, and drove away. I swerved onto the next street and blended in with the other cars. Several police cars rushed toward the alley, going in all directions. I sighed in relief as we kept pace with the traffic.

“You need to lay low for a while and ditch this car. Whatever you do, don’t go to the ball tonight. They will have men there looking for you. In a few days, I’ll send you money to buy another car.”

He frowned. “You aren’t staying home. I really wanted to see you in your new dress.”

“Stop playing. You know that my father won’t allow me to stay at home. Besides, they won’t be able to get to me with my father and all his men there. I’ll be careful so that they won’t have an opportunity to do anything. You don’t have an army. They would target you, use you to draw me away from my father, and try to kill me.”

“I won’t know whether you’re safe unless I’m there to protect you.”

After two hours at the ball, I regretted coming. As soon as I rushed away from Daddy’s side, Vadim tried to ask me something. I already knew what he wanted to say and I couldn’t bear to hear the words. Daddy had already told me, if I asked to marry Vadim again, he’d kill him. My father made idle promises but not idle threats.

I closed my eyes, hating that I picked such a small closet to hide in and make out with him. He wasn’t like most men. I had sucked his cock twice in two hours and he was still intent on asking me to marry him.

How can he still think of marriage when I’ve drained him dry?

“Vadim, you know that I love you but we don’t need to discuss serious things tonight. We barely made it out of here alive. That bitch, and all her men are my enemies. I have to take care of this matter hanging over my head before I think about getting serious about anything.”

He pushed me away from him. “What do you mean get serious. When did you stop being serious about us?”

Closing my eyes, I stood to my feet and wiped my mouth. “You know that I love you. I’m talking about the future.”

“I want to marry you, Anya. I’m going to ask your father for your hand tonight. I’m not afraid of him. After he realizes that I can take care of you, he will eventually give me his blessing. I’ve asked my grandmother to allow me to have access to my trust fund if I get married. She agreed.”

Vadim pulled out a velvet box and slipped a ring on my finger. “I don’t care about that bitch or her men. Whatever you’re going through, we will experience it together. Marry me. Let me show you for the rest of my life, just how much I love you.”

Dad will kill you. We wouldn’t even get to elope or have a wedding night.

My eyes stung as tears felt like acid scalding my skin as they ran down my face. This was the story of my life; close to happiness but never able to have it. They say if you love someone you have to be willing to let them go. If you lose them then your love wasn’t strong enough to endure.

I bit my lip until my mouth filled with blood. “I can’t marry you. I need some space. Right now, I must finish this. I can’t have you pressuring me about marriage. If you loved me like you say you do, you would give me time.”

“I’m willing to die for you. What more can I do to prove that I love you? How can you be upset that I want to make you, my wife.”

I took off the ring. I bit hard on my lip, causing a gush of blood to pool in my mouth to keep from screaming. Tossing the precious jewelry on the floor, I turned and opened the door. “This relationship is over. I thought you understood me but I see now that you don’t.”

Before he could say anything, I rushed out of the room. Wiping my tears away, I ducked into another room. Stuffing my fist in my mouth, I wept. Two fucked up choices were no options. My phone rang. The caller was blocking the number.

I answered it but remained silent.

“Bitch, you thought this was over, but it’s just beginning. You must not care about your boyfriend’s life. Bring him to the meeting and allow me to see your weakness. It’s no wander you were raped.”

I’m going to kill this bitch.

“Meet me at the address I sent to you or I’m sending the video of our little meeting to your dad. I’m sure he’d like to know that you betrayed him as well as his business partner. I doubt that your dad thinks your life is worth fifteen billion dollars.”

Click.

Damn. Either way I’m screwed. There’s no guarantee that she hasn’t already sent him the video.

I texted Vadim.

Baby. You are right. Please stay at Greg’s house tonight. I’ll stop by in the morning and we can talk. I love you.

Normally he would text me right back. I knew that he had his phone but he hadn’t responded. At this point, I could only hope that he would stay at Greg’s and not go home. This had to end tonight.
