I walked to my bedroom and slammed the door behind me.

In my current mood, I might accidentally snap their freaking necks if they tried to sneak into the room to change my mind. Tossing my shirt on the floor, I climbed into bed. Like usual, I took out one of my Glocks and slid it underneath my pillow. As I shifted positions, I laid awake staring up at the ceiling surrounded by silence. My thoughts were too convoluted to nap and according to the bedside clock only two and a half hours had passed. I was a creature of habit and change wasn’t something easy for me. I got out of bed. After snatching my shirt off the floor, and grabbing my guns, I slipped them in the holsters.

The moonlight was beautiful, so I climbed out of the window. This place had a lot that backed to the woods, and a creek that ran down the middle of the land for two miles. After selecting the tallest tree in the woods, I climbed up. I laid back gazing up at the stars. There was something peaceful, soothing, and graceful about stargazing while tossing the universe your problems. This hobby made me feel closer to our Creator.

A creepy sensation ran up the back of my neck, and I turned my head toward the house. In the shadows lurked a bulky silhouette stalking along the house’s perimeter. This man's movements were quite different from the man Maggie hired. When he reached the power box, he cut the power and the phone lines as well. I sat up and watched him head toward the back door. It would take him some time to get through my lock mechanism to enter the house. It wouldn't keep him out, but it would allow us about ten minutes.

I jumped down silently sprinting to Elijah's bedroom window on the other side of the house. Tapping lightly on it, I took out my gun. I was grateful that he was a light sleeper. It wasn’t long before he opened the window. Quickly, I slid inside and pressed my hand to his lips. For once, I signed letting him know that we had company. A fleeting glance at the women, showed that they were passed out and snoring. There was no time to move or get them to safety. Handing him a gun, my muscles tensed as he quickly faced the door. He pointed to his ear and the door. On instinct, I fired five head shots in front of it. When Elijah opened the door, we saw the assassin sprawled on the floor.

Without a word, we separated and searched the rest of the house. The house was clear and I could see the dust bunnies sliding across the floor indicating Elijah was walking toward me. I couldn’t hear him but I sensed his presence.

“We have to find out who is trying to kill you,” said Elijah.

He flipped the dead man over and searched him. A wide smile formed on his lips as he pulled out a phone.

I nodded. “The others won’t be too far behind him. We must move.”

He unlocked the phone with the man’s biometric signature then frowned after showing me the call log. It had only one number. “Do you know whose number this is?”

Shaking my head, I frowned. “No.”

I had a photographic memory but I had never seen that phone number before. I also hadn’t recognized the assassin and it was impossible to guess his nationality. A person’s looks could be very deceiving and I wouldn’t start a war on an assumption.

Elijah shrugged. “I guess we’ll have to do this the old fashion way.” He dialed the number and put it on speaker.

Knowing what my best friend was going to do, I had my phone out and my application open. Whatever was said would be translated into text.

“Is that deaf fucker dead yet. I want his head delivered to my office before sunrise. If you can get him to beg for his life on camera before you kill him, I’ll give you an extra fifteen million.”

Elijah grunted then hung up. He looked up at me and shook his head. “We must go to New York. It's time Cian.”

This had to be a mafia Don, but which one? My bet was on Felix Aslanov.

“Yes.”

He patted me on the shoulder. “You don't know who's after you and that's where I come in. I blend in and have a good relationship with everyone. I’m going to be your eyes and ears while you’re there. It won’t take me long to find out everything happening in the city.”

Hell no.

He was a charismatic man who could glean information from anyone. The last thing I wanted was for my best friend to get killed. He wasn’t in the mafia and he couldn’t move like I could. I appreciated his loyalty and willingness to help, but I wanted him safe.

“No. Go home to Ireland. I’ll call you later when the shit settles.”

“I'm your best friend not your hired gun. You don’t get to tell me what to do. You’ll need help if you’re going to stay alive. I can help you.”

Tilting my head, I studied his body language. I was deaf but I could tell when he was pissed. His body movements were always stiff and exact. His lips would tilt slightly to the left when he was furious like they were now.

What did he want me to say? I had lost so many people I loved trying to protect me. I didn’t want to lose him too.

We had been best friends ever since the sandbox. He was more like a brother than a best friend. My father threatened his life, yet he never left my side.

“Cian, you’ll drop me off a few miles from the nearest store. I’ll Uber to the airport. I’ll text you when I get set up in the city. I will find out who it is that wants you dead, and level this playing field.”

I knew when I wasn’t going to win with him, and this was one of those times. “Meet me in two days, at my favorite spot when you want to hide from the world. If you don’t meet me, I’ll assume the worse and come for you.”

He rolled his eyes. “Cian, if I don’t meet you in two days, I’m dead. You know that I am always on time. Trust me, I don’t have a death wish. I almost checked out in Dubai.”

Dubai had been wild. Elijah had almost died when he took four bullets, meant for me. His heart stopped and he needed a blood transfusion. It was during that horrible day that we found out he had a hereditary heart condition. Thanks to dad, a matching heart instantly became available for the transplant. Now, he was living his life to the fullest and it was time for me to do the same.
