The room was dark so I wasn’t certain he could see my lips moving. After a few minutes of silence, I sat up and tried to get out of bed.

“Sleep Anya.”

I heard the deep rumbling of his voice. He wrapped one of his arms around my waist.

Things could be worse. I wasn’t tied up.How did he know I had diabetes?

I closed my eyes and allowed my exhaustion to flow from me.

“In the morning we’ll discuss why the Albanian and Serbian mafia want you dead.”

I’d rather eat my own gun.

When he thinks everything is fine and lets his guard down, I must escape.

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK

I hadn't expected Anya to be this beautiful. In fact, her beauty was more than that. It was like a contagious disease. Once you were infected you were doomed for life. There was something so expressive and deadly about her eyes, and her bluntness was a welcomed surprise. I had to test her loyalty. A fleeting glance at my watch showed that Elijah would be here any moment. After putting the smoked salmon, garlic mash potatoes and grilled asparagus on the plate, I poured two shots of whiskey. He and I had much to celebrate. He was right on time. The tiny light in the corner of the ceiling flashed blue signaling that Elijah had put in his retinal scan and was entering the secure compound. The tension in my shoulder and neck eased as I fixed myself a slice of pumpkin pie.

Why did she save me? She must know that I could kill her at any time. Yet, she chose saving me over the Albanians. Her father is working with them. Wouldn’t she have been safer in their possession?

The fact that she saved me didn’t sit well with me. I wasn’t used to being saved. It was unimaginable that my enemy had done it. Yet I couldn't deny that she killed the man whose gun was aimed at me. She heard him sneaking up on me and acted right on time before collapsing in my arms with a smile on her face. Anya was used to seeing violence and killing. There was no way I’d give her a gun anytime soon. The only reason she didn't have one now was because the panic room guns were coded to my bio signature. How had a spoiled, pampered woman learned to kill without blinking an eye?

What type of life had she lived where she had to choose between spending millions of dollars or bathing in the blood of her enemies?

In my haste to return to her, I had become careless. I led our enemies back to her. It was a rookie mistake that I would never make again. At this point, killing her in cold blood for the sins of her father, was no longer an option. She was my captive but she would soon become my willing pawn. Against my better judgement, she was quickly becoming a dark, seductive, obsession that I longed to master. Those that slit throats together, stay together. Her type one diabetes would make things difficult. I couldn’t keep her off the grid since insulin was trackable. Her body needed insulin and I would make sure she had it.

There was something about tonight’s assassination attempt that didn't sit well with me.

Elijah crept inside with his Glock raised.

He saw me and holstered his weapon. “Did you have any issues? The word on the street is that some of the Albanians and Serbians rushed in on Felix’s turf on a silent kill order. What have you done? Felix is pissed. Arkan Jovanovic is denying responsibility for the few Albanians acting on his turf.”

He walked over to the sink and washed his hands.

I snorted. “A few my ass. There were over fifteen Albanians working with the Serbians.

Who is Arkan?”

“Arkan is the Don of the Albanian Mafia. He is the person who has given Felix half of the Serbian cocaine business. The business makes Felix ten billion dollars in cocaine revenue annually.”

Elijah drank his shot and smiled down at the plate of food. “Damn. These smells delicious. You should have been a chef in another life.”

Frowning, I scooped a piece of pumpkin pie in my mouth allowing the flavors to enhance the whiskey in my system. “How did you find out all that so quickly?”

“I overheard him bragging about it at the ball. The bastard was as loud as hell and everyone heard it. Felix decided that even if Arkan was trying to kill Anya, he wouldn’t retaliate because the revenue from the Serbian businesses was too lucrative.”

My hand pounded on the table. “What kind of father allows his flesh and blood to be murdered by his business partner? That bastard values money above everything. I’m going to attack his loyalty, ruin his connections, and steal his money before snatching his useless life.”

“If Felix doesn’t know why they are trying to kill Anya, it means that she’s been doing things behind his back. It’s time I find out why.”

He nodded. “Why don’t you take her to your father. Let him initiate a deal with the Albanians and Serbians for a piece of their cocaine business. By letting him hand her over, you will gain honor in his eyes. It’s a win, win, situation.”

“Elijah things have changed. She shouldn’t have to die for her father. At the very least she will be sold as a sex slave to the highest bidder.”
