I walked out. I sped down the road as soon as I got into the car. There was no way for me to contact them. I had no clue whether the mafia would still be there when I arrived. I couldn’t even text Cian.

He wouldn’t leave the hotel without me.

If he thought I was dead, he would verify it by seeing my body. I wasn’t sure how I knew that, but I felt the truth of it deep in my stomach. If they were all dead, I would be stuck in Prague with no contacts, penniless, alone, weaponless, and surrounded by my enemies.

Thirty-five minutes later, I arrived back at the hotel. This time instead of parking in the garage I parked at the back of the hotel. Without hesitation, I jumped up and caught the window seal. I continued to climb until I reached the fifteenth floor. The window was unlocked, and I could see that the stairwell was empty. I quickly slipped inside. A door opened above and several feet rushed down the steps. I hid underneath the stairs all the way to the back where I was shrouded in shadows. I was disappointed that Cian wasn’t hiding there already.

He's deaf so where is he? This is the best place to be to see and read lips.

Over twelve Vietnamese men with AK’s and Uzi’s ran down the steps. One man with blond hair, walked away from the group and slid underneath the stairs with me. My heart pounded as I aimed my gun in his direction. I couldn’t see him but I could smell him. I knew that he wasn’t far from me. The men separated. Half of them remained in the stairwell while the others went to the hotel to look for them. Their language sounded complicated and harsh. While they were distracted, I saw another man slide under the stairs with us. Instantly I knew who it was. It was dark, but his silhouette was striking. I often found myself admiring it. Tilting my head, I inhaled and caught a tendril of his salty hair. I wasn’t surprised that he was close to the end of the stairs, where he could see the men.

I caught a tense movement.

“Don’t move or I’ll blow your fucking head off. Who are you,” a voice asked.

Damn

The man had a gun pressed to Cian’s skull. He was deaf so he wouldn’t know what the man said. I wasn’t sure whether he even knew the man was talking to him.

Think quick or he’s a dead man.

There was no way I could shoot him in the head and not risk killing Cian. If I shot him, the men standing a few feet away would hear the gunshot, and fire on us.

I suddenly grabbed him by the neck. He yelled and fired his gun. I managed to direct the blast upward. After I thought he was dead, I signed to Cian.

The Vietnamese men heard the gunfire and began looking around.

Cian kissed my forehead, then handed me a gun. He unlocked his phone and gave it to me.

Several men rushed to the entrance of our hideaway. Before they could come inside, Cian slid out dragging the dead man with him.

A tall, lanky man wearing a charcoal gray Brunello suit walked up. Judging the way his men immediately separated to make room for him, He was the boss. The language was harsh and I didn’t understand Vietnamese. Glancing down at Cian’s phone, I noticed it was recording and translating the conversations around me. I studied the phone screen as I watched the events fold in front of me.

What is he thinking saving me like this? He is vulnerable. I had a better chance at surviving than him.

He came up to Cian and pointed the gun at his forehead. Soon, all of them pointed their guns at him. It looked like a red dot light show. “Who are you? Killing a member of The Dragons is a fatal mistake.”

Cian shrugged. “I’m Cian. The bastard said that he intended to rape my girlfriend.”

“Cian who?”

He smiled. “My name is Cian O’Brien.”

“It’s too bad your father decided to form an alliance with those Russian bastards. You might have lived passed tonight. You are here with Mikhail Vinogradov. I’m going to kill you and then him,” he said.

“After I retrieve my girl, I’d planned to kill him anyway. My girlfriend was harmed because of his negligence. Do you have a name?”

He blew cigar smoke in Cian’s face. “My name is Le Gian Kien. We have your girlfriend.”

“If you hand her over, I’ll deliver Mikhail to you or you can kill me and risk him escaping your men. It’s your choice.”

Crossing my arms over my chest, I stared at him. “Mikhail is only an acquaintance. His brother, Viktor, is my friend. He is useful when I'm dealing with tricky situations.”
