“I asked you if you knew what Cian’s issue was with Le? He’s taking a significant risk and it’s not normal for him. He isn’t reckless at all.” He turned off the highway. There weren’t many cars on the road at this hour and we were not near the safe house.

“A few hours ago, I was sure that he had never met the man. Now, I'm not sure what's changed between then and now.”

“What does the Vietnamese mafia have on you? Why do they want to kill you?” He pulled into the driveway of the safe house.

Why do they always think it’s me?

Cian had put himself on the line for me numerous times and it never made sense. A man wanting you, and a man willing to die for you was two different things.

“I've never met the Vietnamese. I'm sure that my father hasn’t had any dealings with them either.”

This has nothing to do with me.

I know everything there is to know about Le and I know that he has no issues with the O’Brien’s. He doesn’t even know that Cian is Liam O'Brien’s son. This is more than enough to start a war. If anything happens to Cian, we are going to war. Everyone loves him. If you can tell me why he’s putting his ass on the line, I'd appreciate it.”

I slammed the car door and kicked a rock. “Stop acting like I’m withholding information from you. I don’t know. I would never ask him to risk himself for me like that.”

She snorted. “Cian is Cian. You don’t have to ask him to do anything. Men like him love deep down to the bone marrow. It’s all or nothing.”

After nodding to the men outside, Mikhail walked to the front door. “Look around you Anya. At the drop of a dime, we've left everything to come here because you needed us. Most of the people here don’t even like you. I suggest that you have a better answer for Liam before he gets his hand on you.”

Swallowing my anger, I closed the door behind me. I followed them to the kitchen table. I wasn’t blind but it sucked to be told that they didn’t like me.

Zakhar sat there eating a bowl of noodles. “I received a cryptic message from Viktor. He’ll be here in person.

What has happened?

It must be serious to have him hop on a plane at a moment’s notice.” He brought a steaming hot bowl of noodles to me. “You should eat something. You’ll need your strength.”

He was right. I shoveled the food into my mouth.

Mikhail sighed. “I suspect it might have something to do with Le demanding that Cian hand me over.”

He laughed. “Mikhail where is the brooding bastard anyway.”

“Cian stayed, giving me some bullshit cryptic line about needing to take care of some business. He did give us some intel and he handed some information to Anya for her hands only. I'm not going to ask you to copy your tape but if you’re feeling generous, let me know. Liam is on his way here too.”

“What did you put on Cian? I’m sure he’ll call us if he needs us,” said Zakhar.

An hour later, I was settled in my room when Mikhail arrived with the equipment needed to review the tape Cian had given me. After he closed the door, I began to watch it. I smiled. Arkan was on the video shooting a man named Avraham Maulul in Tel Aviv. It was common knowledge that he had betrayed Itzhak Kadish, the Israeli Mafia of the Kadish crime syndicate. The Kurdish family was the crime syndicate who ruled the world. No one fought them. Arkan was arrogantly foolish enough to do business with them. The Serbian mafia was strong because of their relationship with the Israeli mafia, but partnerships were meant to be broken.

Now that Mier Kadish had been extradited to the United States, things had been strained between Arkan and Itzhak. At best, he was facing drug trafficking, murder, embezzlement, and money laundering. He was also suspected of supplying the California fentanyl drug rings, which led to the biggest drug bust in history. I wouldn't be surprised if the U.S. tried to give him the death penalty. Itzhak was released after serving 10 years in the United States prison. He went missing in Israel. A plan started forming in my head, and now I needed to voice it to someone who could fill in the holes.

I left my room and knocked on Mikhail’s door. “Are you up? I really need to talk to you.”

The door opened immediately.

“Yes. I'll meet you at the kitchen table. It's not appropriate for us to talk in my bedroom.”

I smirked.

How cute. A made man with gentleman tendencies.”

Walking down the stairs, I sat at the kitchen table.

Mikhail grabbed a soda and sat down too. “What’s up?”

“If I can get Mier extradited back to Israel, he would betray Arkan and I could kill him. Most of the witnesses turned up dead. There's only two left and they’re in custody.”
