His chest expands with a deep breath. His steely eyes, filled with fire, drift lower to lips that he shouldn’t be able to see. I try to look away but he’s made it impossible.

Once he’s finished screwing me with his eyes, he abruptly turns back to Mason.

I guess he has no problem looking away.

I blink twice and move forwards to catch up with Freya.

“We’re going to have the best freaking night tonight,” Freya says over her shoulder.

I’m not sure about that. Copious amounts of drink is needed in my current state, though, so the night could be great.

The fourth wine back home has given me a buzz, but I need something heavier now.

Maybe sleeping together worked for him. It’s all out of his system and he’ll no longer feel the need to interact with me anymore. There’ll be no arguing, no poisonous words, no messing with each other, no secret kisses or even more secret sex. Nothing.

Shit.

Disappointment settles heavy in my stomach… but I’m getting what I wanted, right? This was the plan: get the sexual tension out of the way so I can hate him thoroughly, the way I’m supposed to.

I open the fridge, which is a free for all on nights like this. I add the beer we brought, and Freya puts away the wine. The thing is packed with spirits and mixers. Casper judged me for having no food in, but I don’t see much nutrition in here, either.

“Ainsley!” Freya is waving her hands in front of my face so enthusiastically she could land a plane. “What’re you drinking?”

“Somethingstrong.”

“Are you okay?” she asks, her pale eyes piercing me as if she can see into my mind. I hope she can’t.

“Fine. Just need a drink. Hey, James is looking for you.”

A starstruck expression takes over her face. “He’s so gorgeous.”

“Go enjoy your night with your boyfriend. I can fend for myself.”

“Are you sure?”

I give her a playful shove. “Oh my God, woman, go!”

“All right,” she says, laughing. “Try to have fun.”

On that note, she turns and walks away from me.

With the lack of distraction, I’m hyperaware of Casper. It doesn’t matter that we’re in a room full of people, I burn for him in a way that I never have for anyone else before. It’s a dangerous feeling that could lead me to be reckless.

More reckless than having sex with him.

Thankfully, Casper isn’t moving away from his friends, and I see Reggie approaching. I love Reggie. He’s the best guy friend a girl could ask for and he has no problem listening to me rant about his dickhead housemate… who I’m not going to think of anymore tonight.

“Gin?” Reggie asks, picking up a bottle.

“Marry me.”

Laughing, he pours two gins and adds about a thimble of tonic. Reggie will quite literally drink any spirit, and if you mix a bunch of them and give him a tenner, he’ll down that, too. I don’t know how he does it. I’d die.

“Thanks.”

“Everything okay? You seem on edge,” he asks, arching a brow.

I stare into his dark eyes like a possessed woman, trying to find out if he knows about Casper and me.
