Actually, I bet that was Casper.

What is he going to do when he gets back?

Right now, what he’s doing is talking to a random, and I’m sitting here watching because I’m a weird drunk.

Ugh. I lean back in my seat and look at the dance floor. Imani and Marvin are right in the middle, showing everyone else how to do it. They’re so hot together. I was surprised when she chose to move in with me and Freya rather than Marvin, but they do spend most nights together, anyway.

Reggie has disappeared completely. He’ll probably roll in around midday tomorrow with a cheeky grin on his face and a million stories to tell.

Sitting down is having the opposite effect on me. I feel drunker than before, and my stomach is now tied up in a big knot. I’m too hot as I wipe my brow.

The strobe lighting and chest-vibrating music are making me regret the last two glasses of Prosecco already.

“Drink.”

I jump in my seat as Casper slams a black drink down in front of me. He sits down, trapping me against the wall so I can’t run away.

“What is it?” I ask, eyeing the glass suspiciously.

“Coke.”

“Laced with…?”

“Just fucking drink it, Ainsley.”

He doesn’t sound quite as posh when he’s swearing at me.

I take a gulp and smile sarcastically. He doesn’t react, but I didn’t really expect him to. He’s stoic right now. The man would win a game of poker every time.

“You can go now. I’m fine. Thank you for the Coke.”

He stretches his legs out, crossing them at the ankles, getting comfortable.

“You’re not leaving. Why are you not leaving?”

“Why are you not drinking?”

“I’m worried there’s something in the Coke, and if I take more than a sip it might kill me.”

“Ice. There is ice in the Coke.”

I laugh. “As frozen as your heart.”

His eyes pin me to the seat, and I see a super quick flash of emotion, but I’m too tipsy to understand what it means, and it’s gone after a millisecond.

I look down into the glass and watch the cubes of ice dance around the bubbles—anything to avoid having to look at him because I’m sure I’ll say something stupid.

Or lean over and lick his abs.

“There is nothing else in the Coke, Ainsley.” He’s exasperated, and I’m sure he’s now kicking himself for not spiking it.

I take a sip and see him fold his arms over his chest in my peripheral.

“I don’t understand. Why are you looking after me? Casper, hello?”

I glance up to see him looking confused, as if he doesn’t even know why he’s sitting here helping me out. Wouldn’t it be funnier if he left me to fall over and lie in my own vomit?

“There are some heinous people around. I’ve seen and heard enough of it on my course and while being in court. Surely you’ve heard about the robberies.”
