“Okay, look. There’s a client, rich as hell—wipe their arses with fifties, rich.” He could afford to do that, too. “They want me to plan this big company event. They said it’s for about five hundred people.”

“Reggie, that’s amazing! I’m so proud of you.”

“Yeah. Thing is, I can’t do it alone, and there’s no one else I want to work with. You know how I feel about the other morons on our course. We’re a good team, Ains. It’spaidwork. You in?”

It takes a second for my brain to catch up and absorb what he’s asking me. An actual paid job in the field I want a career in. It’s the easiest yes ever.

“Shut up. Are you kidding me? Of course, I’m in. We’re getting paid to plan an event!” Excitement bursts inside my stomach, and I can no longer keep my cool. I put my mug down and jump up and down on the spot. Any experience in event planning is good, but to get a paid job is adream.

My bank balance is dangerously close to being in the minus, and my wages won’t go far. I’m so glad I only have four months left at uni and then I can get full-time work.

Laughing, Reggie waves his hand at me. “Get it all out.”

“Wait.” I freeze and eye him suspiciously. “At no point in that little speech you just made didyousound excited. This is amazing news, something we’ve dreamt of for years, getting paid to plan. In fact, it seemed more like you were telling me bad news. What’s going on?”

He grimaces and puts his gross drink down. “It’s notbad.”

“That was so unconvincing. Something is off. Who’s the client? By the weird rich speech, I’m guessing they’re also arseholes.”

Reggie, Marvin, and Imani have money, and they’re not bad people.

We all know Casper fits the stereotype, though.

“It’s for a law firm for their annual company anniversary.”

“Okay, but why was that hard for you to tell…” I narrow my eyes again, finally catching up. Now it makes sense why he was acting like he was about to tell me my cat had died. “Which law firm, Reggie?”

“The Harts’.”

Casper’s. Fucking. Parents.

“Nope. I’m out. It’s not worth it. I’mnotworking for him.”

He sighs in frustration. “Ainsley, come on. This is a paid job.”

“He will make thishell.”

He levels with me and steps forwards, his patience melting away. “Are you really going to turn this down? Work that will look good on your CV when you’re applying for jobs.”

“Reggie, come on. You seriously want me to work for Casper? I think I’d rather eat instant noodles.”

“And sell your body to pay rent?”

“I haven’t had to do that so far. I think I’ll be fine.”

I don’t tell him that some months I came dangerously close to buying a mini skirt and leather bra.

“Ainsley! The pay is bloody good, and we’re working for his parents, not him. Come on, can you really say no?”

The honest answer is that I cannot. I don’t come from a wealthy family. We always had just enough, and they certainly couldn’t afford to pay my tuition and rent.

I groan and sit down at the table. My earlier excitement evaporates into thin air. Why does it have to bethem? I’ve never met his parents, but they raised him, so…

“Excellent, we meet with them in thirty minutes.”

“What?”

“Let’s go.”
