I tidy, stack, overthink, and clean. I never knew six hours could feel like ten. With five minutes left, I contemplate dusting the shelves just to have something to do. Saturday afternoons are always so quiet. We could easily close an hour earlier but we always get the odd person running in right as we’re about to lock up.

Mrs Crossby hands me another delivery of textbooks, seeing that I’m about to fall asleep. I smile at her gratefully and take the books to Law.

Law!

That’s not helping, either.

Casper will probably have these on his bookshelf. His own copies, though, as I can’t see him borrowing anything. I open one titled ‘Criminal Law’ to see what the appeal is.

Blah, blah, blah, let the killer go.

“Ainsley.”

I jolt, almost dropping the three books in my hands. Slamming the Criminal Law paperback shut, I turn towardsthatrough voice.

Casper smirks at me, stopping just short of laughing in my face.

He’shere.

“What are you doing?” I ask, taking a step closer as if he’s reeling me in with an invisible rod.

His eyes drop to my lips for a fraction of a second.

Oh, fuck.

He regains composure before I do—long before, if the simmering heat under my skin is anything to go by. “The kidnapper released you, I see.”

I claw at the books; the only things physically between us. “Apparently, I was too much trouble.”

“I cannot imagine…”

Sarcastic bastard.

I narrow my eyes, and he grins.

At some point, while we’ve been talking, he’s moved closer just a step, but it’s enough to overwhelm me. If he leant in, his lips would touch mine. He clears his throat, his eyes saying a lot more than his words ever have.

He also wants us to get naked.

I’m on fire. It’s far too hot in here, my palms are clammy, and my core pulses with the need to come. It’s on the tip of my tongue to tell him to touch me. It wouldn’t take long, I’m sure.

I should suggest an enemies with benefits situation.

This is Casper!

The hormones have obviously fried my brain.

“Um. Do you need anything?” I ask, raising the law books still in my hands. They hit his chest because he’s so close. Actually, my hands do, and the contact takes my breath away.

I’ve seen the chest beneath that T-shirt.

Don’t picture his abs.I blink rapidly, almost coming apart at the thought of that chest on top of me.

He doesn’t even look down at what I’m holding. No, his eyes are burning into mine and I can practically see the X-rated movie playing out in them.

“Do you think I came here for books?”

“We’re in a library, Casper. What else would you be here for?”
