He shifts his backpack on his shoulder. “That’s convenient.”

I raise my chin slightly. “Is it?”

He stands perfectly still in the dimly lit hall, but I can tell from his intense eye contact and his slow smile that he finds me attractive. But that isn’t enough. I need more than that. I need someone who understands what drives me and is seeking a meaningful connection.

“I’m not the kind of girl that falls into bed with a guy based on a fleeting attraction.”

His pupils dilate. “That’s unfortunate.”

A slight flush creeps up my neck and face. “Well, at least we have that sorted.”

Alex walks into the small bedroom and places his backpack on the floor, hanging his garment bag on a hook behind the door. “I know it’s late, but would you greet Graham’s relatives? I’m not their favorite person.”

I lean against the doorframe. “What did you do to them?”

He pushes his hand through his hair. “When they criticized Regina, I told them a few unpalatable truths.”

I fold my arms over my breasts. “That’s awkward.”

I want to push him back against the bed and fall into his strong body. A warmth floods my body.

He steps into the doorframe, inches from me, and says, “I can read your thoughts. You regret giving me the brush-off.”

My mouth falls open for the briefest moment. Recovering, I lean back against the frame and say, “Maybe I am. But I’m careful about getting involved in complicated things.”

Alex smiles. “That’s progress.”

My thoughts race as I try to figure out what he means. The way he is looking at me, I feel exposed and vulnerable.

His hand curves around the back of my neck. “You’re not shrugging or staying silent. You’re telling me what you actually think.”

His thumb gently traces circles on my skin as his gaze holds mine. I’m lost in the physical tug between us.

I close my eyes to focus on the intense sensations flowing through me.

Without thinking, I say, “I want you to kiss me.”

He pulls me forward until I’m pressed against his hard body. “Are you sure, Immy?”

I open my eyes and stare into his hot gaze. One of his hands is behind my neck, and the other anchors my pelvis to his rigid maleness.

I can’t think. Only feel. “Please, Alex.”

He lowers his head and devours my mouth. It feels hot and intense. I grasp the front of his shirt and hold him close. I don’t want him to stop.

His tongue slides over mine, and I greedily open to him. Wanting him to explore every crevice and hidden part of me. I unclench my hands, smoothing down the fabric of his shirt before winding my arms around his neck and pressing into his hard body.

My phone vibrates, and I freeze. Slowly, Alex extricates himself from me. He kisses me briefly and says, “Saved by the bell?”

I’m out of breath. “It’s after ten. I can’t imagine what someone needs.”

“The relatives are here?” His deep voice soothes my nerves.

I touch my cheeks. They are probably pink and blotchy. When I look down, my black wool dress seems intact.

I pull the phone from my pocket and read the text. “Yes, there are four adults standing in reception.”

He smiles lazily. “I’m going to shower to cool off.”
