Rescuing her goes against all of my principles. I hire people who can think independently and handle themselves in any situation. She could have rented a car, stopped for provisions, and already been figuring out the heating system. And what adult exactly has trouble sleeping in a rental house?

Her eyes widen. “Okay. But I’m new, and this place is remote. There is no food, and it’s freezing here. I need time to figure things out.”

Kate has thrown her into the fire. I shouldn’t intervene, but I find something about her intriguing. And I need to support her involvement so she can sort out the wedding.

“Fine. I’ll take you into town. But your luggage stays here. Pack what you can fit in an overnight case. I’ll see you outside.”

Ignoring her gasp, I leave the kitchen and head towards the foyer.

Heat flashes through my tense body. I don’t need this. I’m stuck here for three or four days. The wedding will be miserable. Regina surrounds herself with wealthy individuals who do nothing—except for attend galas, spend money on luxury cars, and drink to excess. I can’t wait to escape all of it. But I have an inkling that Imogen will provide a suitable distraction for the next few days.

Dinner Out (Imogen)

Ineatly place my cosmetics bag, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a t-shirt, and yoga pants into my oversized handbag. Stepping out of the manor, I close the large wooden door and see Lorimer on the phone, pacing near a black Land Rover.

My interactions with him makes me think about his role in the company. He is a bit arrogant and not that interested in helping a new colleague. I pull out my phone and scan the Bespoke Adventure website for a photograph of Alex Stern. I don’t see anything. I know Kate showed me several pictures in the past. In all of the photographs, he was without a shirt, sailing or standing near a cliff overlooking the ocean, and it was clear that his strong, muscular body could handle any adventure.

He ends his call and gestures to the vehicle.

I make myself empty my mind. “I’m ready.”

I pull open the door and climb in. He doesn’t seem keen on taking me into town, but the idea of staying alone in the manor is unsettling. It’s sprawling, dark, and rather cold.

I reach for the door handle and say, “Lorimer, I feel bad about asking you to take me to town. I can get an Uber. You’re right—I can handle this situation on my own.”

He stares at me, and the thought pops into my head that I could get lost in his intense green eyes. Lorimer is beyond handsome and has a rugged sexuality that appeals to me, which is takes my breath away. I’ve never been attracted to someone. I’ve always been more attracted to academic types, who like to share ideas and think about obscure topics.

A muscle in his jaw tightens. “I didn’t mean to offend you. I spend too much time on my own in remote places. I forget others are used to grocery stores, streetlights, and public transportation.”

After I nod, he shifts the vehicle into gear and drives down the long private road.

He is an interesting mix of intense, tightly coiled adventure guide with a slight amount of upper-crust gentleman thrown in. His English accent screams highly educated, along with his expensive leather shoes and cashmere sweater. But his tan face, natural highlights, and easy confidence tell me he is capable of fighting his corner.

“How long have you worked for Bespoke Adventures?”

“A long time.” He keeps his eyes on the road.

“Do you go on adventures or stay in the office?”

He glances at me. “There isn’t an officeper se. Everyone that works for the company is in charge of leading tours or expeditions. Except for a small remote staff and Sonia who files paperwork, handles the schedule, and does other tasks.”

“Yes, Kate mentioned Sonia. I spoke with her briefly.”

Lorimer turns onto the road. “Why did you agree to take all of this on?”

I remind myself not to overshare. Kate had surgery today, but I haven’t heard anything. I look out the window. It’s getting dark. “Kate and I have been best friends since we were little girls. Seeing her in pain with a broken elbow made me put aside all of my objections.”

“What were your objections?” His voice is deep and masculine.

I smile. “There were so many. It’s Christmas. My parents and sister were expecting me in South Carolina. And I’m not experienced with hosting events, so being in charge of a wedding is a bit of a stretch. While I’m a teacher, I don’t consider myself particularly forceful. Also, Kate repeatedly said that her boss is a nightmare.”

He slows down for a pedestrian crossing the street. “Really?”

I clear my throat. “Do you find Alex Stern difficult?”

His mouth curves into a smile. “It would be unprofessional for me to comment. You’re a new employee, and Alex owns Bespoke Adventures.”
