But I can’t accept that offer.

“Don’t do that,” I whisper to him, shifting on my feet and getting nearer so Luna can’t hear. “I’m not tearing apart any families. Not on Christmas.”

Farrow has a look like his mind is made up.

“Lo will want me to stay anyway, I’m betting,” I tell him, then motion to the lights on the roof. “He let me do that.”

“It’s pretty,” Luna muses.

“See, I made their house pretty.”

Farrow pops his gum, shaking his head but smiling.

The car door opens, stealing our attention. Maximoff walks over to us, shoulders squared, and Luna whispers, “Something’s wrong.” She’s observing his grave expression.

I reach for her hand, and she holds it tight.

Maximoff joins us, pocketing his phone. And he looks at his sister as he says, “There’s been a death in the family.”
