“Right. Unlike you.”

I gave him my middle finger. “Very funny.”

“Well, if you think that’s a good idea.”

Chuckling, I lifted my eyebrows. “Not gonna happen. She’s too special and talented. Plus, I don’t want to give the other guys a single chance of touching her.”

“And I thought I was a Neanderthal.”

“You are.”

We laughed as I parked down the street. Killian was the kind of man who didn’t keep bodyguards surrounding his house. He was certain no one would get to him. The man was a fool.

“I’m still wondering why he decided to betray the alliance,” Max said.

“Another term comes to mind. Blood is thicker than water. Even though his own son betrayed him, I have a feeling he blames both his death and his betrayal on us.”

“Yeah, I guess. I hope when I have a son one day that I can instill some old-fashioned values. You know?”

“Are you trying to tell me something?”

He laughed. “Not yet. Raleigh refuses to give up dancing entirely. One day.”

My buddy had a wistful tone in his voice. “Did you handle the purchase in Vegas?”

“Everything is in order. We’ll leave after this is handled so we can share the good news with Torino. He also won’t be involved in the movie or music industries in the near future.”

“Good. We will get back in time for the night’s festivities.” The man had thought of everything.

His grin almost made me chuckle. Raleigh had somehow managed to soften the brute. “Don’t worry, man in love. We won’t be late.”

As we climbed out of the car, I was still thinking about the way she’d looked when I’d left her curled in bed. I’d wanted to stay but it wasn’t like I could call in sick. The thought amused the hell out of me.

When we reached the front door, I leaned against the brick, allowing Max to make the grand entrance. We were lucky in that Killian’s wife was visiting her sister in Florida and this was the staff’s day off. Perhaps he hadn’t realized with Stephen’s help, I’d learned almost everything about the man, including his shoe size.

The move was calculated, the day chosen specifically. As luck would have it, it was in our favor for a change.

I didn’t bother pulling out my weapon. I had no intention of using it.

The door was opened and I smiled, staying hidden beside the tall bushes.

“Max. You’re right on time. First, allow me to say how sorry I am about your loss. Viper was a great man.”

“Yes, a terrible loss.”

Killian almost sounded sincere. I shifted from my temporary hiding place, offering a huge smile. The look of shock on his face was quickly replaced by a slight hint of fear.

“What’s wrong, Killian? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” I pushed him inside, Max slamming and locking the door. “That’s right. You just did. Isn’t that right, Max?”

“So true, my friend. You look pretty good for a dead man.”

“What the fuck is going on?” Killian asked, doing what he could to regroup, acting as if he wasn’t to blame for my ordered death.

Max waited with his hands behind his back, a permanent grin plastered on his face.

“Let’s see,” I started. “I’m fully aware you sent your nephew to keep tabs on me.”

“Where did you get that information?”
