“I’m sorry.” Her feeble answer had zero sincerity to it.

“You already said that.”

“I don’t know what else you want from me.”

“The truth never hurts.”

“I told you the truth, but I am sorry that I came into your home without being invited. There. Okay? Better now?”

“That’s a lame apology if I ever heard one.” I glared at her for another few seconds. “Here’s what we’re going to do. Since it’s obvious you’re in trouble, yet you refuse to tell me the truth, I’ll agree to allow you to stay for a couple days under one condition.” I held up my index finger to further make the point.

“What’s that?” Hope filled her eyes like a ray of sunshine, the bright shimmer having the same effect as before. Damn, the woman could end up being my kryptonite.

“You will follow my rules. Period. There are no exceptions.”

“I can do that.”

I wondered if she understood what guidelines were. “Good. I think you understand that when rules are broken, punishment is earned. Correct?”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“Yes or no, Madisen.”

“Why, yes, sir.” Her tone had turned sullen, the insolence increasing.

I ground my teeth, doing what I could to keep my cool and it had nothing to do with anger. “Perfect. Then it won’t surprise you that you’ve earned a round of discipline given your egregious behavior.”

“I wouldn’t call it egregious.”

“Madisen.” Her face turned bright red from the deep growl I issued.

“Okay. I get it. I said I was sorry.”

“Sometimes sorry isn’t enough.” I moved to my desk, dragging the chair to the middle of the room. When I showed her the brush, she began chewing on her lower lip.

“What are you doing?”

What I was thinking would never have a decent ending, but I felt there was no other choice. Whatever danger was lurking in the shadows, my gut told me it would track her down.

“Something I have a feeling should have been done a long time ago. I’m giving you a hard spanking.”

CHAPTER10

Madisen

The man was out of his mind.

A spanking?

With a thick wooden brush? Oh, no, no. Not under any circumstances. The audacity was off the charts, something I couldn’t process. How could he honestly believe I would allow myself to be treated that way? Nope. I had more self-worth than that. I could tell by the way he was looking at me that he believed he was completely in the right with his decision. Who the hell did he think he was?

A dangerous man. But he was more than that as well.

Former decorated Marine.

Lifesaving hero and CEO of Powers Security.

Consigliere of the Cosa Nostra.
