“I say when you can leave.”

“You don’t own me.” I overreacted but I was filled with frustration and fury at his attitude and everything that had occurred in the last few days. I threw my arm back to slap him with everything I had but he caught my fingers in his, fisting our hands together.

Then he tutted me as he shook his head. His eyes were glowing in the streaming sunlight, far too mesmerizing for my own good.

As he towered over me, all six foot four inches of him crowding my space, I turned my head to the side, hissing, “Let go of me.”

“That’s not going to happen, at least not until you behave.”

“You’re a bastard.”

“And you’re an impetuous woman who needs discipline.”

“Oh. You are…”

He grinned as I struggled in his hold. “I’m what?”

“Infuriating.” I continued fighting him until the mug slipped past my fingers, cracking into four large pieces when it hit the floor, coffee splashing across our feet. If the liquid was hot, I couldn’t feel anything but the heat rising in my cheeks and the desire dampening my panties. This wasn’t good at all.

I suddenly couldn’t think clearly or breathe. When he leaned in, I was certain my knees would buckle. All I could think about was licking the beads of sweat trickling down the front of his chest.

No. No. No. I couldn’t go there. This wasn’t what I wanted at all.

“I think you like that, little minx. Don’t you?”

Little minx? “No, I hate it.”

“You’re lying to yourself.”

“No, I’m not!” My breath skipped as he lowered his head even more until I could feel his hot breath warming the nape of my neck.

“Your body betrays you.”

He was right as he’d been about far too many things. The wafting fragrance of my longing infused with the rugged scent of his masculinity. My nipples were rock hard, pushing through my flimsy shirt. Suddenly, I couldn’t fight him any longer.

I had a feeling I’d burn in hell for what I was thinking but I no longer cared. For all the longing, the passionate fantasies, he was even more enticing in real life.

He gripped my jaw, lifting my head then pressing it against the wall. I was mesmerized by the golden flecks in his irises, the deep green of his eyes luminescent. As he brushed his thumb back and forth just under my lips, I knew I’d issued a slight whimper, but he didn’t scold me for doing so. When his hold tightened, now completely possessive, his fingers pressed into my cheek.

The tension between us mounted, his breathing as labored as mine. I wanted so much to touch him, to caress the muscles in his chest and abdomen, but as happened every time I’d been around the powerful man, I was paralyzed from excitement and anxiety. It wasn’t that he was so much older or that my brother would be furious. It was that I’d only been with two other men, only one mattering. I felt like the inadequate one, nothing like the other women he’d had.

Finally, I willed the spell broken, rubbing my fingers down his chest, the tingles turning into electric sensations.

“Be careful, Madisen. You might get burned.”

“What if I want to be seared from your touch?” I lifted my gaze, holding his for several seconds. I could see the fight he was having, the hard push of doing the right thing. “What if I want more?” My core was heated close to eruption, every cell in my body on fire. I wanted him more than I dared to admit, so much so that I would risk everything just to be with him one time.

“This isn’t a good idea but you’re not getting away from me.” He was fighting the heavy weight he’d carried for years, struggling with the same unbridled desire that had haunted almost every dream. He was determined to remain my protector and nothing more, but that wasn’t what life was about.

Fear.

Danger.

Worry.

I did want more. I wanted it all, a taste of the forbidden fruit, a chance to remember just how precious life really was. He issued a husky growl, his mind still processing the same raw need that had consumed me, the same apprehension I’d seen in his eyes the moment we’d seen each other on the ballfield.

“Madisen.”
