I didn’t hesitate to fire.

The windshield was blown, the assassin down for good.

“Oh, fuck!” Mike yelled, covering his head.

“Just stay down. I’m getting you the hell out of here.” I pressed my foot down on the accelerator, constantly glancing into the rearview mirror. While I’d clipped all three, that didn’t mean there wasn’t a second vehicle remaining close. Damn it. The second I slammed my hand on the steering wheel, a bolt of white-hot anguish slammed down the length of my arm. “Shit.”

Blood continued seeping through my shirt, enough I pressed my hand on the wound, trying to keep control of the vehicle with the other.

“How bad is it?” Mike asked, referring to my shoulder.

“It went straight through.”

“We need to get you to the hospital.”

“That’s not going to happen.”

He took a deep breath, slumping against the seat and staring out the shattered glass. “You’re a hardhead. Anyone ever tell you that?”

“A few times.”

“Do you have anything like a first aid kit in this thing?”

“Behind the seat.” I checked the rearview mirror again before yanking out my phone, dialing Stephen.

“Did you send the brother off?” he asked.

“Nope. I have another guest for an extended timeframe.”

“Shit. What happened?”

“Let’s just say I was right about how the fuckers would attempt to get to Madisen. Everything cool there?”

Stephen whistled. “I’m heading to the cameras now to check. Nope. No activity.”

“Good. Let’s hope it stays that way. I’m on the way. I need to make certain we’re not followed. If anything happens, I have a mission room.”

“Like a panic room?”

I snorted. “Something like that. The button is under the desk, left hand side. Madisen will be safe inside.”

“Whew, my man. You’re prepared for anything.”

“That’s how I stay alive. If you see a fucking thing, call me.”

“Will do.”

As I ended the call, another shot of pain tore through my shoulder, forcing me to wince.

I noticed Mike had found a package of gauze. “Put this on your goddamn shoulder and keep pressure on it.”

“Thanks.” I grabbed it from his hand, desperate to get back to Madisen. She had to be scared shitless at this point. When I pressed it against the wound, I snarled.

“You really need to have that looked at.”

I turned my head, glancing at Mike. “I’ve had worse. We need to get you off the street. I need to keep your sister protected. That’s what we’re going to do.”

“You’re trying to tell me they’ll keep coming?”
