“You’re angry with me,” she said quietly.

“I’m furious… because of the situation, but what in the hell were you thinking stepping foot outside the house?”

“Mike said some horrible things to me about you. I couldn’t stand it any longer. I had to get some air.”

“Goddamn it, Madisen. If I’d been five seconds later, I wouldn’t have been able to save you. Do you understand what I’m telling you?”

“Do you honestly think I was trying to disobey you? I thought everything was secure. Hell, I figured the system would emit little red bells or flashing lights. I just meant to be out for two minutes. The son of a bitch grabbed me as soon as I stepped foot off the stairs. How the hell did he get in without you knowing?”

“Power glitch.”

“Shit. This is never going to end. Never.”

“Oh, trust me. It will end. Did the asshole say anything to you?”

She shook her head. “No. Not a word. But I could tell he knew who I was. Just a feeling.”

“Well, as the only woman in the group, that wouldn’t be too difficult.”

Her eyes remained wide open, the poor girl still shivering. “What are we going to do?”

“Put on some dry clothes and get the hell out of here.”

“What makes you think we won’t be followed again?”

When I said nothing, she walked closer. “You think someone inside your organization is working for Dante. Don’t you?”

“I don’t know what to think other than people can be bought off easily.”

Madisen was incredulous. “No. That’s crazy.”

“That’s normal, Madisen. Which is why every safety protocol must be followed. Come. Let’s get you out of these wet clothes. Grab a bag. We’ll be staying at the compound until this is over.”

“What are you going to do?”

“First, I’m going to see if I can find out what we’re dealing with.”

The way she lifted her head, darting her eyes back and forth, I sensed her continued frustration. “Then what?”

“Then I’m going to provide some much needed discipline to the people who work for me.”

She touched my arm. “Don’t be angry with Mike. I’ll handle him. He doesn’t understand how I feel but I’m too exhausted to explain it to him.”

“His carelessness almost cost you your life. Unacceptable.”

“Remember who you are, Danny, You’re a good man in a tough situation.”

I rubbed my hand down her face. “I do remember, baby, but this has gotten too far out of hand. I’m the man who refuses to allow anything to happen to you, someone who made a promise I intend on keeping.”

“I believe you. Just don’t die on me. Remember what I said.” After brushing her cold fingers across my lips, she backed away, still looking at me before heading up the stairs.

I tilted back my head, trying to calm the rage. With the assassins failing, Dante would likely send the rest of the soldiers he’d brought down to finish the operation. I waited for a few minutes before returning upstairs, immediately heading for the communications room.

As soon as I came inside, Stephen sat back in his chair. “You need to hear this.”

I jerked him up, moving him away from the console then slamming him against the wall.

“Whoa! What the hell?” He grabbed my wet shirt but didn’t retaliate.
