Then his phone rang and instantly, I knew something was wrong.

“What is it, Gio?”

His intense growl let me know we were serious danger.

“Fuck,” he hissed. “Do whatever it takes to get around the issue.” He tossed the phone, hissing under his breath.

“What happened?”

“Traffic accident. My men are blocked in. Far too convenient. Keep your seatbelt on. This could get dicey.”

As he shifted gears, pushing the clutch into second, I gripped the edge of my seat. Fear rose in my throat, but I trusted Danny completely. He’d always had a penchant for sports cars, racking up a half dozen speeding tickets that I remembered Mike teasing him about. I tried to concentrate on memories from the past, all the reasons I’d fallen in love with the rogue sitting next to me as he drove around the sharp curves.

Everything was fine for a couple of miles, the road ready to straighten out, when his breathing hitched.

“Here we go, baby.”

I turned around one last time to see the headlights of both vehicles following us coming closer, far too quickly.

He shoved the gear into fifth and pressed his foot down on the accelerator. I was able to see the speedometer. Within seconds, he was doing over seventy miles per hour. Then eighty. I sucked in my breath, clamping my hands around the edge of the seat. The way he maneuvered the car was as if it was on rails, no tires squealing, no jerk in the ride.

He was an expert driver, swinging around a new set of curves with ease. Then I noticed a different set of headlights coming from the opposite direction.

Don’t panic. There are other drivers on the road.

The small pep talk did little good when I could swear the driver was drifting into our lane. However, with no markings and the current distance, I couldn’t be certain.

I glanced in the side mirror and cringed. “Danny. They’re getting closer.”

“I see them.”

Breathing for both of us became labored, the blur of the scenery adding to the anxiety. I tried to concentrate on the driver heading in our direction. “Danny. I think he’s going to hit us.”

He leaned forward, saying nothing.

“Danny. Danny!”

As he jerked the wheel to the left, I couldn’t hold back a scream, the vehicle heading toward us barely missing us as it passed on the wrong side of the road. As Danny corrected, the slight shift in action allowed the driver directly behind us to get within inches, the lights blinding.

All I could hear was the rapid thumping of my heart. Then I heard another high-pitched scream erupting from my mouth that didn’t seem real as Danny lost control, the Maserati slamming into the side of the mountain.

Then we went airborne and he threw his arm across my chest.

And it felt like we were flying.

The brutal thud sounded in my ears first, the shattering of glass muted. We were still moving, skidding across the pavement but I had no control. Creaking and whooshing noises could be heard over Madisen’s scream.

A flash caught my attention. One of the fuckers had lost control, careening over the edge of the cliff. I felt a moment of vindication.

“Danny,” I heard her whisper or maybe I was hearing things. I wasn’t a praying man. That had been something my mother had tried to instill but it had never taken with me. Or maybe it had been brutally ripped from me during the skirmishes overseas. Whatever the case, I prayed that whatever happened, my beautiful Madisen would be saved.

I sensed we were heading toward the cliff. As images of my life flashed in front of my eyes, I realized that almost all were filled with visions of the woman I loved.

And the woman I was about to let die.
