“Maybe.”

“I assume you’re bringing a guest with you?” Now his grin was salacious.

“She’s never going to be far away from me again.”

“Possessive, aren’t you?”

Now I was the one who leaned in closer to the screen. “Just like you knew I would be.”

“Very true. I always said that about you, but remember that when you fall in love, the woman is always the one in charge.”

“Who said anything about love?”

“You just did. Call me when you know the schedule. I’ll make certain the penthouse is ready.” He winked before ending the call and I grinned from ear to ear. I had a few other plans in mind for the lovely Madisen. As long as the timing worked out, I just might enjoy going to New York for a change.

“You’re not working, are you?” Madisen said from the doorway, her tone accusatory.

When I lifted my head, there wasn’t a single molecule that wasn’t on fire. She was a vision of beauty, the flowing red sundress highlighting every curve to perfection. “Just doing what I need to.”

“Uh-huh. Going against the doctor’s orders. He told you to take it easy.”

The poor girl had bruises covering a good portion of her body, but by some miracle, her injuries were only superficial. I looked like I’d been the punching bag for a couple of boxers. As he approached the desk, I immediately rose from my chair, taking my time heading in her direction.

“I am taking it easy,” I said in a low growl.

Almost immediately a warm flush swept along her jaw, cresting on her cheeks. “If by that you mean you’re not out slaughtering people, then fine.”

I gripped her arms, drinking in her perfume. The last eighteen hours had been nothing but a wait and see period. The three soldiers had returned from combing the streets, every piece of information confirming that while Dante had been in town, seen in a couple of restaurants with movie producers, he hadn’t made a move on attempting to find Madisen. However, whispers of the Irish moving in on California’s most vicious cartel’s turf had been all the buzz.

That was enough for me to feel confident in the knowledge O’Rourke was behind the attacks.

“I’ll have you know I never slaughter people.”

She delicately brushed hair from my cheek, rolling her fingers over the top of my ear. “Whatever you say, gorgeous man.” She rose onto her tiptoes, carefully easing her body against mine, darting her tongue across the seam of my mouth.

“Be careful, lady. I just might take you right here in my office.”

“Not a chance, buster. I will make you follow doctor’s orders.”

This time when I laughed, my ribs hurt like a son of a bitch. Perhaps Max was right. The woman was always in charge. I slipped my hand down her back and captured her mouth, the kiss a tender moment. I never wanted her to hurt again. Maybe that was a tall order, but I’d make it my mission to allow her life to be special.

As I slid my tongue inside, she moaned into the kiss, her body quivering in my hold. The taste of her was like sweet cherries. I wanted every inch of her and planned on taking it later.

“Ahem,” the male voice said from behind us.

I broke the kiss and she nipped my bottom lip. “What is it, Stephen?” I growled.

“Am I interrupting something?”

“Yes,” both Madisen and I said together.

“I have some new information I think you need to see.” His tone immediately changed and I lifted my head. The look in his eyes was troublesome.

The traitor had obviously been found.

“I’ll be right back,” I told her.

“Nope. If I’m going to be part of your world, then I want to learn about your life.” Her defiance brought a gleam to my eye.
