“Thanks,” I said.

She walked back to the coffee machine and programmed something for her own cup of coffee.

“Whatever you’re feeling,” Rory said. “It’s okay.”

I eyed her. She leaned against the counter with her hip, very at home in this kitchen. She clearly spent a lot of time here.

“He’s not human, is he?” I asked carefully.

“No, he’s not.” I’d expected the answer, but it still shocked me.

“What is he?”

“A dragon shifter,” Rory said.

I gasped. “This is all too much. I thought shifters only existed in books.”

“Books have to get their material from somewhere, right? Nothing under the sun is new. Everything exists in some form or another.”

“Like in astoryform.”

Rory smiled. “Sometimes, I wish that were true, but no, it doesn’t work that way.”

A dull ache started between my temples, and I pressed two fingers to my left eyebrow.

When Rory’s cup of coffee finished—she’d programmed something fancy, judging by the smell that rose from it—she came to the breakfast nook and sat down opposite me.

“If this isn’t something you know, I know it’s a lot,” Rory said gently.

“Are you human?”

Rory hesitated long enough that it was an answer in itself.

“What are you?”

“A wolf shifter. Like Mykel.”

I blinked at her. “Mykel, one of Colter’s associates?”

Rory nodded. “He’s my brother. He’s Colter’s beta.”

“Like, second in charge?” I asked to clarify.

“Yep,” Rory answered.

“And the other guy?”

“Lazlo?” Rory asked with a frown and sipped her coffee. “He’s a vampire.”

I gasped.

“Yeah, that’s what I thought, too, when Colter brought the guy in, but Lazlo is almost like family. He’s been around forever—almost literally—and he’s one of us. He’s in the inner circle, and he’s always been good to Colter, trustworthy, all that shit. So, I’m not allowed to find fault with him.”

“But you do?”

Rory laughed. “Well, he’s a vampire.”

I still wasn’t sure I knew exactly what all of that meant. The more I learned about this world I knew nothing about, the more my head ached, and I felt like I would throw up.
