She hummed a song—the same song I’d heard her hum before. A strange power filled the room, vibrating against me, moving and changing as the tune did.
What was she doing?
“Liv,” I said.
Her eyes fluttered open, and she looked around, bleary-eyed, before her eyes fell on me. Had she really been sleeping and humming in her sleep?
“What are you humming?” I asked.
“What?”
“You’re humming a song. You always hum the same song.”
“Oh,” she said and pushed up. She winced when she did. “I didn’t realize I do that.”
I frowned. “You’re hurt.”
“It’s better than it was before,” she said.
“It will get better, still.”
“I don’t understand what’s going on.” She crossed her legs and ran her hands through her loose, dark hair. I wanted to do the same—I wanted to touch her tresses, smell their sweet scent, and feel their softness between my fingers.
“It doesn’t matter what’s going on,” I said.
“I’m getting really sick of you bossing me around without explanations for anything,” she said.
“We don’t have time for a show and tell.”
“Just a show, then?” she asked bitterly.
“You’re going to start training,” I said.
“What?”
“If you’re in danger of being attacked as often as you are, you have to learn to defend yourself.”
“Don’t I have a say in this?” she asked.
I widened my stance and folded my hands over my chest. “At this point, you don’t know what’s good for you.”
“Gee, thanks,Dad.”
I frowned at her.
Rory appeared behind me in the doorway, leaning against the doorpost when I looked over my shoulder at her. She only watched me, not saying a word.
I turned my attention back to Liv.
“You’re starting tomorrow, so heal up, so you’re ready.”
“No,” Liv said.
“What?” I stared at her.
“You heard me.”
I bristled. No one told me no. It was infuriating… and fucking sexy that she did. I wasn’t going to indulge the second point. I focused on the anger.
