A buffet-style spread had been laid out on the table, and there wasn’t a servant in sight.

“Good,” I said. “Okay is good.”

“It is,” Rory said. “By the way, what’s up with this savage eating style?” Rory asked.

I laughed. “I don’t think you understand the word.” I picked up a plate and dished myself some chicken, beef, and potatoes, piling the food high on my plate.

“You know what I mean,” Rory said, taking a plate for herself, too.

The guys were going to shit their pants if they found out we were eating like this on a night they were out in the town.

“Liv didn’t look comfortable with the servants last time,” I said with a shrug.

Rory raised her eyebrows at me. I caught her expression from the corner of my eye and refused to look at her.

“Since when do you change your ways to cater to others?”

I shrugged again.

“You like her, don’t you?”

“Don’t you?” I asked.

“You know what I mean,” she said again.

Instead of answering Rory, I changed the topic back to training.

“They’re not being too rough on her?”

“They have to be,” Rory said. “It’s the only way she’ll learn.”

I nodded. Rory was right. I wanted Liv to be able to defend herself, and that was the only way.

“There’s a lot of gossip around,” Rory said.

I sat down. “Yeah? Like what?”

“The vampires are upset about you killing one of them.”

I groaned. “What was I supposed to do? He was about to kill Liv.”

“I’m not the one you have to convince,” Rory said. “They’re already full of shit. You knew it was going to be a tough one to win them over, if you could do it at all.”

“I just thought it would be easier if we all got along.”

“You don’t want them to see you as a tyrant.”

“I don’t give a shit how they see me,” I said with a scowl. “Lazlo doesn’t seem to think I was wrong when I saved her.”

“Lazlo is different,” Rory said.

I sighed. This was an inconvenience. I already had so much on my plate, and having to deal with unhappy vampires was last on my list of priorities. It should have been higher up, since I wanted to win them over, but I had other things I had to focus on.

I sensed Liv coming closer and cleared my throat.

A moment later, she walked into the dining room. Her eyes fell on me and held my gaze just a little longer than was necessary. I shivered.

“How are you feeling?” Rory asked with a smile when Liv sat down.
