“Tired,” I said with a laugh. “Sore.” I frowned. “Why doesn’t Lazlo have an issue with my blood?”

“What?” Colter asked, confused.

“He’s a vampire, but you’re okay with him being around me every day, and he never looks like he’ll lose it.”

“Lazlo is a very old vampire,” Colter said. “He has a lot of control. He also answers to me, and that allows him a different kind of power.”

I wasn’t sure I understood it, but I turned my attention back to the machine.

“I want you to close your eyes and focus,” Colter said.

“On what?”

“Magic,” he said.

I stared at him, but he nodded at me and encouraged me to close my eyes. I did as he asked. I had no idea what I was supposed to focus on—I didn’t have any magic, and I was new to this whole thing. I hadn’t even known—

Before I could think about anything more, I became aware of magic. It wasn’t my magic, but Colter’s. It oozed out of him, wrapping itself around me, and I was very aware of not only Colter, but of his dragon, too.

“There,” Colter said. “Do you feel that?”

When I opened my eyes, I looked down at our hands. My skin glowed, magic illuminating it.

I gasped.

“That’s it,” Colter said. “It worked.”

“What worked?”

“The spell is broken. I felt it. Now, we just have to take the machine out of here.”

Colter let go of my hand and reached around the machine, picking it up as if it was nothing more than an empty cardboard box. His incredible strength amazed me. It was a shifter thing, I’d learned, but I wasn’t going to get used to it.

“We’re going to take this home,” Colter said. “Hold on to me.”

It wasn’t lost on me that he said, ‘take this home.’ He didn’t say ‘myhome’. Was he implying that his apartment was now my home, too?

I held onto Colter, and he reached around the machine and twisted his ring. I felt the magic hum, but nothing happened.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

Colter tried again, but again, nothing happened.

“Shit,” he said. “I can’t move more than one thing.”

“Why not?”

“Because it’s imitation magic and not the real deal,” he said with a scowl. “The fae may have spells that work for all kinds of shit, but they’re so limited in what they can do.”

“The fae?” I asked.

Colter nodded. “They’re the ones who created this gem for me. I’m going to have to come back for the machine.”

“No,” I said. “Take the machine. I’ll wait.”

“I’m not leaving you here,” Colter growled. “Jerry knows you’re here, and if anyone else comes—”

“The spell has been broken, so anyone can take the machine now,” I said.
