He gave her a pointed look and shook his head almost imperceptibly.

He was being so weird, so unpredictable.

“Do you have anything you could tell me after the spell you did last night?” I asked Andra in the hopes of changing the topic away from Colter. Information about my lineage was what we were here for, after all.

“I’m afraid I can’t tell you much,” Andra said. “I can’t tell if you have powers or not.”

“What does that mean?” Colter asked, chiming in. “How can’t you know if she has magic? I saw it three times; I told you.”

“And I’m telling you what my spell found—nothing.”

“Maybe you did it wrong,” Colter said.

Andra glared at him. “Do you dare tell a fae the spell is wrong?” Magic rose around us, Andra’s and Colter’s matching it. It created a mixture of power that swirled above me, and I shrunk away from it.

“I’m telling you she has powers,” Colter countered. “I didn’t use magic to see it, and it was there.”

“Something is blocking me,” Andra said, shaking her head and looking at me again. “It’s like you have a wall around you, keeping your magic—which should be there—at bay.” She looked pointedly at Colter.

I sighed and sat back in my chair.

Andra did the same, almost mirroring me. She closed her eyes, and I watched her face change as she went somewhere else. Her skin glowed lightly.

She started humming a song, and I jerked upright when I realized the song was exactly what I’d always hummed.

“What is that?” I asked.

Andra opened her eyes. “What?”

“The song you’re humming.”

“Oh, it’s an old folk song that we sing our children to sleep with. Your mother used to sing it to you when she was here with us, too.” Andra took a deep breath and started singing, putting words to the melody.

In golden arms and love’s embrace,

Magic rocks you to sleep,

With love at your heels and hope in your heart,

You’re a treasure, a star to keep.

The words rushed back at me as if I’d known them all along, a memory I’d long forgotten.

I joined in the song, singing the rest of the words with Andra.

A mother’s love is all you need,

A father’s guiding hand,

And magic to hold you safe and warm,

In the heart of this promised land.

So close your eyes, baby of mine,

Tomorrow brings gifts from above

When you open your eyes, a new day will dawn
