I relaxed a little. “Oh. Good.” The last thing I needed was for Colter to have someone retrieve me like I was a lost dog or something.

“What happened to your apartment?” Lazlo asked.

I shook my head. “I don’t know. Everything is a mess, and I…” I stopped talking when a lump rose in my throat. I hadn’t meant to cry, but the tears had suddenly come out of nowhere. I swallowed hard. “It’s just been a tough day, you know?”

“I can imagine,” Lazlo said. “It’s going to be okay, though. Everything is as it should be.”

I smiled at him. “Thanks. I—”

Before I could say anything else, Lazlo lifted a hand and hit me over the head with something hard. I saw the object coming, almost as if in slow motion, but I couldn’t react in time.

A sharp pain shot into my head, my vision blurred and turned black, and I sank to the floor. The last thing I heard was Lazlo saying, “Oh, don’t worry, I’ve got you,” before it all went dark.

* * *

When I blinkedmy eyes open, my head ached like a bitch. A sharp pain shot into my temples with every beat of my heart, and I kept my eyes closed, doing inventory. I had a hell of a headache, but everything else seemed okay… except for the fact that I was tied up.

I heard voices, so I kept my eyes closed and tried to place them.

“I don’t know when she’ll wake up; just let her come around when she does.”

“What if you fucked it up completely, and you’ve turned her brain into mush?”

Why did the voices sound so incredibly familiar?

“Even if that’s the case, we can still use her blood, and that’s all we want, right? If fact, if she wasn’t awake and aware, it would make our lives so much easier—” The voice stopped talking, and I was aware of movement in the room. “She’s awake.”

“How do you know?” Someone moved closer.

“You can open your eyes, Liv.” He knew my name. When I blinked my eyes open, Lazlo stood over me.

The bright light hurt my eyes, and I squeezed them shut again for a moment, trying to figure out what the hell was going on.

“Lazlo?” I asked. I fought against the ropes that bound me, but they wouldn’t budge.

“Don’t bother, the ropes have been hexed.”

“Hexed?” I asked.

“You’re not the only one with fae on your side.”

I shook my head and regretted the movement when pain shot into my temples again.

“What are you talking about?”

Someone else stepped into view, and I gasped.

“Jerry?” My old boss smiled yellowed teeth at me, and he did nothing to hide his fangs this time. Shit. He’d gone all vampire on me, and Lazlo wasn’t far behind.

Why were they here, together? Why was I tied up? Why…

It all hit me like a ton of bricks.

“You,” I gasped, looking at Lazlo. “Colter trusted you.”

Lazlo snorted. “Yeah, well, it’s not my fault the dumb shit thought an alliance with the vampires would fly. It took me a couple of years to work my way up into his inner circle, but time pays off, you know?”

“You’re working against him?” I asked. “Withhim?”
