He chuckled. “You’re everything.”

Colter’s phone rang before I could answer.

“That might be Rory,” he said.

I nodded and rolled off him. He shuffled off the bed, found his pants on the floor, and dug out his phone. Rory’s name flashed on the screen. He looked at me, mixed emotions in his eyes.

“Colter,” I said. “Whatever it is… I’ve got you.”

Colter nodded and pursed his lips together, answering the phone.

His face paled.

“We’ll be right there,” he said.

I frowned at him, and he dropped the phone.

“She wants us to come back in,” he said in a thin voice. He had a white circle around his mouth, his face becoming more and more ashen. “It’s bad news if she wants that.”

I got out of bed and hurried to the bathroom to clean up and get dressed.

“We won’t know until we’re there,” I said when I stepped out of the bathroom again.

Colter sat on the edge of the bed, his head in his hands.

“I already know,” he said.

I wrapped my fingers gently around his wrist, and Colter looked up at me. His eyes held so much pain.

“It’s going to be okay.”

Colter didn’t answer me.

“Put on a shirt,” I ordered. “We’ll use the ring. The sooner we know, the better.”

Colter nodded and did what I said, but he moved like he was on autopilot.

When he was dressed, I walked to him and wrapped my arms around him. I planted a kiss on his lips.

“No matter what,” I reminded him.

He nodded and wrapped one arm around my waist before he twisted the ring.

For a moment, we were weightless. Nothing existed but our emotions, and Colter’s was a mess of panic, fear, and resentment.

I wished I knew how to take that away for him.

In a flash, we appeared in front of the clinic and walked inside. Colter walked through the hallways like a zombie, and I held onto his hand, trying to keep him with me in the present.

We found Rory in her office. She had a grim expression on her face.

“It’s bad, isn’t it?” Colter asked.

She nodded. “I won’t lie to you. The last time I looked at your blood, there were some anomalies, but it was still okay. You were functional. Now…” She swallowed hard when her voice cracked.

“No,” Colter croaked.

A lump rose in my throat.
