“How are things?” I leaned against the counter, and a knot that had been wound tight in my stomach uncoiled a bit.

“It’s so good to hear your voice.”

He chuckled. “It’s good to hear yours, too. We miss you around here.”

“I wish I could just come home. I get why you sent me, but this place is a hellhole.”

“That bad? What’s happened?”

I shook my head. “Nothing’s happened. I just don’t belong here.”

“Have you found out anything about Turk?”

“Nothing we can use,” I said. “Everyone here seems to know him or about him, but no one knows where he is, and Bishop reacts cryptically when I ask about it.”

“You’ve been talking to the alpha?” Colter asked, and I could just imagine his frown.

“Yeah, he’s hard as nails and pissed off that I’m here at all. He’s so defensive; it’s like he thinks I’m here to take his throne or something.”

“You should stay away from him,” Colter said immediately.

“He’s the alpha, Colter. You know I can’t ignore him.”

“You can avoid him. The Twin Cities is a big area.”

“Why? I think he might be the person I need to talk to. He’s close with Turk’s dad, so if anyone will know, it will be him.”

Colter was silent for too long. He was thinking about it.

“He’s not all bad,” I added. “He can be somewhat kind if he wants to be.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Colter was suspicious immediately.

I flashed on our meeting in the park. He’d been the one to shift rather than kill me.

“I’m just saying he’s not alpha because he’s unreasonable.”

“That’s not an answer.”

I sighed. “Look, Colter, you’re the one who sent me here, so let me do what you need me to do.”

I thought about the tension between Bishop and me. It was unexpected every time, but it intrigued me. What was it about him that drew me in like that? Damn if I was going to tell Colter any of this, though.

“I don’t like it, Rory,” Colter said. “I didn’t think you were going to be right in Bishop’s face with this.”

“You asked me to play in his backyard. What did you think was going to happen?”

Colter grunted, and I knew exactly what the scowl that went with it looked like.

“Check in more often, so I know what’s going on,” Colter said. “We need to find Turk, but I need you safe, too.”

“I can handle myself,” I said.

“Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.”

I didn’t know what that was supposed to mean, but I didn’t ask, either. Colter had sent me here because he’d trusted I could do my job, and that was what I would do. Bishop had to be the answer. Too many things he’d said about Turk didn’t make sense, and I was determined to get to the bottom of it.

“Be safe, okay?” Colter said. “And if there’sanytrouble, you let me know, and we’ll be there in a flash to take care of it.”
