I walked to the front door, and a butler opened for me.

“This way, sir. Mr. Rowe is expecting you.”

I should hope so.

I followed the butler through the mansion and to the door of Dario’s office.

“Mr. Lowery is here to see you, sir.”

“Yes, yes, bring him in,” Dario said, and the butler nodded to me as if I didn’t know what the fuck those words meant.

I stepped into the office, and Dario stood from behind his large mahogany desk.

Dario was an older shifter, with a few centuries under his belt, and his age was starting to show. His dark hair had become streaked with gray so that it gave that salt-and-pepper look most women lost their shit over, and his full beard had the same streaks.

It gave him a warm, almost grandfatherly look, but his eyes were still sharp and missed nothing. His face had two halves to it: the charming smile at the bottom, and the cunning, shifty eyes at the top.

“Bishop, how are you?” Dario came to me with his arms wide before he shook my hand. When he touched me, a chill ran down my spine. Something was different about his magic. It was laced with… I couldn’t put my finger on it.

I frowned. “How was your trip?”

“Just fine, just fine,” Dario said and turned toward the wet bar. “What’s your poison?”

“Belvedere, if you have it,” I said.

Dario poured a glass of vodka for me and tequila for him. We both drank it on the rocks.

He passed me my glass, and I sipped the drink before holding up the glass and looking at the liquid.

“Where did you say your trip was to?” I asked, making sure I wore my poker face.

“Oh, you know how business is. It took me all over.”

“Hmm.”All overwouldn’t have left him with the remnants of dark magic. That had my guard up. “Good to be home,” I added.

“No place like a man’s own bed,” Dario agreed.

“How’s Turk?” I asked.

Dario snorted. “Be grateful you don’t have children. They’re a pain in the neck. I thought after Turk grew up and did his own thing, he wouldn’t be so full of shit anymore, but it looks like it’s here to stay.”

“Might be genetic,” I said dryly.

Dario threw his head back and laughed.

“You’re the only one I allow to get away with remarks like that,” he said when his laughter faded.

Yeah, right. Like he could do anything to me. I was a lot more powerful than him, despite the fact that he’d made it to my inner circle. Being alpha was a burden, but it came with a shit ton of perks.

“Where is he?” I asked.

“Turk?”

I nodded.

“Who knows?” Dario shrugged. “He’s on his own mission.”

I narrowed my eyes. “You don’t know where he is?”
