“Okay,” I finally said, nodding. I stepped back and took a seat in the armchair I’d been offered after all. “I’ll bite.”

Dario smiled and looked at Alina.

“Thank you, my dear.” He dismissed her, and we waited until she left before continuing our conversation. Dario took a seat in the armchair next to mine and looked at me with a pleased expression.

“What’s the catch?” I asked.

“Catch?” Dario repeated, feigning confusion. Fuck him. I knew he had a plan.

“What do you want in return? You’re not giving me a fae who’ll help me gain power for nothing.”

Dario drained his glass. I’d still only taken a few sips of my drink, and I balanced the glass on the armrest.

“You’re a very astute businessman,” he said. “You always ask the right questions.”

I only pinned him with a hard stare. I wanted him to get to the point.

“I want one of your shifters to marry my son,” Dario said simply.

“He can’t get a mate of his own?”

He chuckled. “Not one with power, you know that. Turk isn’t the most powerful shifter, and if he mates well, it will bring—”

“More power to your family,” I finished for him.

Dario rubbed his hands together. “Of all the shifters I know, you’re the one who can appreciate the need for power the most. Of course, since you’ll have all that extra power, it won’t be something you ever need to worry about, either.”

I studied Dario. I understood the need for power, and he was trying to make sure that Turk got a leg up in life when he couldn’t do jack-shit himself. It was a smooth plan.

“Who?” I asked.

“I haven’t decided that yet,” Dario admitted. “I figured we should get Alina and her spells lined up first, and then we can discuss it when you know what you’re working with and who you’ll be comfortable giving to Turk.”

I considered it. I tried to find a loophole, anything that wouldn’t work, and give Dario the upper hand, but I couldn’t find it. The plan seemed sound, and if he was willing to let me decide what worked for me after I had that extra power… what could go wrong?

“It’s a deal,” I said to Dario and held out my hand.

Dario grinned at me, and we shook on it. Dario got up and walked to the bar, pouring himself another tequila before he lifted his glass in the air in a salute.

“To business.”

“To power,” I said, and we drank to it.

On the way home, I texted Remus.

“I need you at the house.” I had to talk to him about this.

When I walked through the front door of my sprawling estate, Remus was already there.

“That was quick,” I said.

“I was in the neighborhood.”

I walked to the living room. I sat down on a leather couch and looked out over the large, immaculate garden. My landscaping artist had just finished designing it. Lights had been positioned underneath the plants, bringing the landscape to life, making me feel like I was in an exotic location.

Nice.

“What’s up?” Remus asked, sitting down on another couch.
