Movement caught my eye on the stairs from the office, and when I looked up, Sabrione descended.

“Oh,” I said. “I didn’t realize you were here today.”

“I needed to think,” Sabrione said.

Her wild red curls hung loosely over her shoulders, and she wore a dress that looked like it was a mass of fabric wrapped around her. She was small and pixie-like, with freckles and bright eyes that saw everything in this realm and in others.

“Sabrione, this is Rory,” I said. “Rory, this is one of my resident fae.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” Rory said, looking Sabrione up and down.

“And you.” Sabrione stared at Rory, reached out, and grabbed her shoulder.

“Hey,” Rory said, surprised. “What are you doing?”

“Sorry,” Sabrione said, but she took a moment before she let go. “I was just… checking.”

“Checking what?”

“If you’re real.”

Rory shook her head and glanced at me.

“About as real as they get.”

Sabrione smiled at Rory and looked at me.

“I’m going for a walk. I’ll be back later.”

I nodded and let the fae go. She always did what she wanted.

When she was gone, Rory shivered.

“She’s weird.”

“The powerful fae usually are. You don’t have a lot of fae around?”

Rory shook her head. “Not since Colter’s plans took a turn. Our pack is mostly composed of shifters.”

“The vampires,” I remembered.

Rory glanced at me. “Yeah. It’s common knowledge across the board, huh?”

“It was a radical idea,” I said. “But it was doomed to fail. You can’t give space at your table to someone with dark magic.”

Rory nodded, and we sipped our drinks in silence. I was so damn attracted to her, I struggled to think straight. What was this? Since Aster, I’d told myself I would never get involved with a woman again. I couldn’t afford to be ripped apart a second time.

Rory made me want to go against that resolve. She made me want to get to know her, to get close to her.

She had a hidden agenda, though. If I got involved with her in any way, I was just going to cause more trouble for myself.

“Why are you really here?” I asked, the words tumbling out of my mouth before I could stop myself.

“What?” She frowned, looking confused.

“What are you doing in my city?”

Her confusion turned to shock and then to anger.
