“This city and everyone in it is my business. Turk’s family is my business. That means you’re sticking your nose in my business by asking around.”

“Why don’t you help me find him, then, and we can both rest easy knowing that it’s all good? I can go home. You’ll finally be rid of me, and I won’t be this pebble in your shoe all the time.”

“You’re not a pebble in my shoe,” Bishop said.

“You’re sure as shit nothappyI’m around,” I snapped. “If I didn’t know any better, I would say you want to run me out of town yourself.”

“I’m not trying to run you out of town.” Bishop rubbed the back of his neck. “In fact, stay as long as you like.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “I thought you wanted me to go back to where I came from.”

“Yeah, well, that was before—” He cut himself short.

“Before what?” I pressed.

Bishop shook his head and tried to step around me to leave, but I wasn’t going to let him.

“Before what?”

“Stop snooping around my business, and you can stay as long as you want,” he said.

“How about you stop snooping around mine?” I countered.

“Maybe I would if you weren’t in my territory.”

“Maybe if you didn’t hold out on Turk, I wouldn’t have to be here.”

“What is it with you and Turk?” Bishop snapped.

“I could ask you the same question.”

“Hey, I’m not the one who let my pack get so cozy with the vampires.”

I frowned. “What?”

“I know your alpha was ready to get them on board, and that’s dark magic. Dark magic isn’t welcome in my city. If you can play nice, and not bring that shit into my world, then you can exist here, live and work and whatever, but stay away from my people.”

He pushed past me toward the door.

“I don’t agree with dark magic, and we’re not involved in it,” I said.

Bishop paused at the door and snorted.

“Don’t tell me, with all your power, you can’t tell that I don’t dabble in that. You would have picked up on it. I’m not here to take anyone away from you or destroy anything you love with it.”

Bishop spun around, his eyes wide. “What?”

“You heard me,” I said softly.

“Why would you say that?”

“Because I know you’ve been to hell and back, but I’m not here to give you a repeat of that.”

Bishop’s eyes became misty, his face riddled with emotions.

“You don’t know anything.”

“I know what it’s like to lose the people you love. I know what dark magic can do.”
