“What?”

“I just wanted to call and find out where you stand.”

I frowned. “Where I stand with what?”

“With Bishop,” Colter said simply. “If you get involved with him, this whole thing will become a lot harder, and—”

“Who said I was falling for him?” I asked. “What did my brother say?”

“He didn’t say you were falling for him, but your response to what I’m saying is enough for me to know there isn’t nothing there. You can’t do this, Rory. I told you to be careful of him.”

“That’s what I’m doing. Why is everyone checking up on me?”

Colter was silent for a beat before he spoke. “I know I sent you into the lion’s den when I sent you out there. If I could have sent Mykel, I would have. It’s dangerous work, but you’re strong enough. I figured that if anyone could find Turk, it was you.”

“Yeah? Well, I’m still on it, right?”

“Just don’t get distracted,” Colter warned. “Bishop has always wanted more power, and he’ll do whatever it takes to get it. He already sent Turk out to find our weaknesses.”

“He wouldn’t do that.”

“Then why did Turk come to us at all?”

I wanted to fight with him, to tell him it wasn’t like that, but the more I found out about Turk, the more I heard from others where he belonged in the food chain around here, the more I was starting to think Colter might be right.

This wasn’t just about a kid who didn’t know where he wanted to be. Turk could cause damage with what he knew about us, and if a power play around here was such a big thing... It was hard to believe Bishop would do something like that.

“Bishop isn’t who you think he is,” I said.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

I shook my head. “You don’t even know him.”

“Neither do you,” Colter answered.

I was getting pissed off at how everyone seemed to think I couldn’t see shit coming until it slapped me in the face. The last thing I could see on Bishop’s agenda was the hunt for more power.

“I think you’re focusing on the wrong thing,” I said. “You’re all so damn worried about me, but maybe you should be worried about the fact that I’ve been here for a while now, and I still haven’t found a trace of the guy. That could mean one of only two things.”

“He’s dead,” Colter said, listing the first.

“Yeah, or he doesn’twantto be found. If that’s the case, we have to look into why he doesn’t want to be found, rather than the fact that he’s missing in the first place. I don’t think Bishop is the problem. I think there’s something else going on.”

“You keep defending Bishop,” Colter snapped. “What if he’s just using you to get what he wants?”

I bristled at that, but I didn’t answer. The more I said about Bishop, the more Colter would fight me on it and tell me I was letting myself be fooled.

“I’ll send a couple of wolves to help you,” Colter said.

“And make Bishop think we’re infiltrating? I don’t think so. You’ll just be asking for trouble. Just let me do what I do, and I’ll let you know when I find something.”

“Just remember why you’re there, okay?” Colter said.

“Bye, Colter,” I said and hung up.

I bristled with frustration. My brother had run to Colter, telling him shit that wasn’t true, and Colter took him at his word because Mykel was his beta. I wasn’t involved with Bishop.

Who was I kidding? That wasn’t entirely true.
