“Did the wolf pull through?”

“Yeah, rabies isn’t fatal with shifters, but it took him a few weeks before he was okay,” Elaine responded.

“Glad he made it.”

“Yeah, we have our moments here. It was one of the wolves in Bishop’s inner circle, so that wasn’t fun, either. It was mortifying.”

I couldn’t imagine something like that ever happening back home, and if it did… what would Colter think?

“You should come out with me sometime soon, and we’ll meet him.”

“The alpha?”

Elaine nodded.

“Sure,” I said.

“How about this Friday?”

“Oh, you’re setting a time,” I said.

Elaine smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I’m serious that you should announce yourself before you pick up shit you don’t want.”

Okay, I would bite. Maybe, if showing my face and introducing myself would help me find Turk. Maybe the alpha would know something. I hadn’t wanted to cause ripples. I’d hoped to be in and out before anyone really noticed I was here, but maybe it wasn’t quite the same as at home.

Colter had all these shifters set up in different positions, and they were the ones who ran point on new shifters who came to town. If Bishop wanted to do that himself, that was fine, too. It just seemed like a lot of work to go through for every visiting shifter.

“Friday it is,” I said.

I finished my sandwich, and the conversation turned to our history in the medical field, where we studied and gained our experience.

I was glad Elaine had offered to show me around. I didn’t want to ask a bunch of questions right away—that would look suspicious. If someone showed me around and introduced me to a few people, I could figure things out much easier without looking as nosey as I was going to have to be. I’d never been to Minneapolis before, and I didn’t know jack shit about the place or the people. I didn’t know how I was supposed to find Turk in the first place, but Colter seemed to believe in me.

I wasn’t sure if that was the best move, but he’d called the shots, and I had to do what he said.

I sighed, wishing not for the first time that he’d sent Mykel instead. My brother had always been better at finding people or digging up dirt on the magical beings around town. Colter couldn’t do without him, though. Giving up his beta for a wolf who was very new in the pack in the first place hadn’t made sense, I guess.

I was just sour that the next best thing had been me. I should have seen it as a compliment, but it didn’t feel like one now that I was here in a city I want to be in, cold and lost in a medical clinic that needed a serious makeover to get back on its feet and do what needed to be done for the community.

Hopefully, my contact with Bishop, when I met him, would help me out. I’d find Turk in no time at all, and I could go home without any unnecessary drama.

RORY

Acouple of days later, a knock on my door sounded.

“Coming,” I said and hurried down the stairs.

The house I stayed in was a two-bedroom wooden structure with a homey kitchen and a large sunroom in the back. I liked it—I used one room for myself and the other as an office, and it was nice to stay in a place that felt like it hadn’t kept up with the times.

When I opened the front door, Elaine stood on my porch.

“Oh, hi,” I said, surprised to see her. It was my day off.

“I hope you don’t mind, but I pulled your info from the files at work to find your address.”

I wasn’t sure how I felt about that. I had a phone number; she could have called.
